Gies College of Business at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is seeking applicants for a Senior Brand Writer to join our growing team of nearly 20 marketing professionals. If hired, you will work closely with designers, writers, videographers, marketing managers, and others on a team that functions as an in-house marketing agency.

Job Summary
Responsible for bringing to life the College's brand story and mission for our key audiences, through the writing of stories and marketing copy for both digital and print media. Candidates should be adept at producing compelling, on-brand copy for a range of assets, including top-level website pages, newsletters, annual reports, digital advertising, social media, brochures, etc. Showcasing the people of Gies Business through well-crafted, engaging storytelling is a key component of this position. As an integral member of the Gies Marketing and Communications team, the person in this role must be highly collaborative, creative, strategic, and able to work in a fast-paced team environment while adhering to deadlines and paying close attention to detail.
Duties & Responsibilities
Creating Marketing Copy

  • Produce high-quality, audience-targeted copy/advertising for digital and print media;
  • Generate concepts, creative directions, and ideas for copy that resonates with our audiences;
  • Refresh and update existing copy with messaging that reflects the College's brand story;
  • Apply the Gies Business brand, tone, and style guidelines, as well as quickly identify (and correct) messaging that does not meet guidelines.

Generating/Writing Stories
  • Generate ideas for stories that engage key audiences and support the College's key messages;
  • Interview story subjects and write creative profiles and feature stories that bring to life the people of Gies Business;
  • Develop a story strategy and plan for demonstrating and reinforcing the College's Purpose, Commitments, and Beliefs throughout the year.

Team Collaboration/Communication
  • Collaborate closely with team members in a variety of roles to launch and produce highly effective deliverables;
  • Understand project requirements, target audiences, key messages, and desired outcomes;
  • Participate in brainstorming and other creative activities to develop strong ideas and solutions;
  • Adhere to the team's project management processes, including daily monitoring/updating the status of projects via Asana;
  • Take direction and use feedback from team members to grow and improve.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in marketing, business administration, communications, public relations, or a closely related field.
  • Three (3) years (36 months) of professional work experience in marketing, public relations, communications, brand management, or a related professional area.
  • Demonstrated experience in writing and editing print, digital, and other written materials.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Deep understanding of language, cadence, and flow.
  • Diligent eye for detail and grammar.
  • Strong creative and conceptual thinking skills.
  • Ability to adapt messages for a variety of communication tools (social media, web, email campaigns, etc.).
  • Ability to work independently, managing several projects at a time while adhering to deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Appointment Information
This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 5004 - Marketing Associate position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the close of the search. Salary is commensurate with experience, with the base salary starting at $65,000. Position may work in a hybrid home/office environment as agreed upon by supervisor.
