Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The mission of the School of Nursing is to enhance and improve the health and well-being of the people of North Carolina and the nation, and, as relevant and appropriate, the people of other nations, through its programs of education, research, and scholarship, and through clinical practice and community service. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Nursing has been the leader in nursing education in North Carolina throughout its history. Established in 1950, it was the first school of nursing in North Carolina to offer a four-year baccalaureate nursing degree program followed by the first master’s degree program, the first continuing education program for nurses, first doctoral program, and first accelerated BSN option to students with college degrees. Today, the School is renowned for its academic programs, its research and its commitment to clinical and community service within state, national and global communities.
Position Summary
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Nursing (SON), a research-intensive, top-ranked school of nursing seeks outstanding candidates for the Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs (SADAA). The SADAA is a faculty member with an administrative officer who facilitates the planning, administration, evaluation, and continuous improvement of the academic programs of the SON. The SADAA ensures the academic standards and policies of the University, Graduate School, SON, and accrediting and approval agencies are met. The SADAA is also responsible for programs, and policies that support student academic progression and clinical site contract compliance. The SADAA provides support for special educational related projects as needed and is considered an expert on topics related to the state of-the-science of pedagogy.
This faculty appointment includes 50% administrative effort and 50% faculty effort. Faculty responsibilities include teaching nursing courses, scholarship/research related to field of study, and service to the SON, University and State per SON APT/APR guidelines. This position will hold a secondary administrative appointment of SADAA.
Administrative-Specific Responsibilities Include:
* Represents the School of Nursing in University-wide and/or professional nursing academic initiatives.
* Provides vision and demonstrates innovation, creativity, and courage in facilitating cutting-edge and forward-facing, high-quality academic programs to address complex and evolving healthcare needs and systems in alignment with the strategic plan, Leading with Light.
* Provides intellectual and strategic leadership for academic programs and for assembling a faculty with the expertise to implement innovative pedagogy and academic programs.
* Advocates for the academic program mission of the School, the scholarship of teaching and educational support needs of faculty.
* Leads and manages systems to support academic program planning, implementation, evaluation, and continuous improvement.
 Oversees development and implementation of academic policies.
 Ensures a high quality and supportive experience for students.
 Resolves issues around course scheduling and course map.
 Assess academic program leaders in ensuring adequate course coverage including the hiring and supervision of part-time instructors.
* Oversees and evaluates the implementation of educational programs and policies adopted by Academic Affairs and Policy Council
* Resolves programmatic issues and/or faculty-student concerns
* Assures plans for academic program compliance with professional accreditation and regulatory body guidelines.
* Coordinates and approves School of Nursing reports submitted to university, regulatory, or accreditation bodies on behalf of the School’s academic programs.
* Responsible for monitoring, updating, and implementing SON Evaluation Plan.
* Monitors systems to support academic advisement and progression of students from admission through graduation.
* Collaborates with relevant SON leaders and faculty to develop and submit relevant educational grant applications that are consistent with School’s mission.
* Supervises and facilitates in collaboration with the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs and the respective academic Assistant Deans ongoing monitoring of systems to support clinical site contracts and clinical placements.
* Maintains listing and ensures enforcement of graduate faculty appointments and restrictions.
* Responsible for investigating and resolving all student academic issues for admitted students, in collaboration with Program Assistant Deans.
* Responsible for recruitment, hiring, managing and performance evaluation of OAA staff.
* Supervises and facilitates the work of Academic Affairs, including Academic Assistant Deans, Assistant Dean of innovation in Teaching and Learning. and the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
* A doctorate degree earned in nursing or a closely related field (i.e. EdD, PhD, DNP, DNS).
* Eligible for or hold current registered nurse license for the State of North Carolina.
* Evidence of success in academic scholarship, such as with funded training grants/centers and educational publications/presentations.
* Minimum of 3 years academic administrative experience.
* Experience in and passion for leading change; knowledge of undergraduate and graduate curricula in nursing, simulation, and pedagogy.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Demonstrated relevant national leadership related to one or more of the following: nursing curricular development; program evaluation; evidence based educational methods for both online and on-ground programs; nursing educational scholarship; faculty development and mentoring; and an awareness of external issues impacting nursing education.

Campus Security Authority Responsibilities

This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities.
