The Georgia Center for Cancer Statistics is a surveillance research center located in the Department of Epidemiology at the Rollins School of Public Health. The center carries out the day-to-day surveillance activities of the Georgia Cancer Registry, provides data for cancer prevention and control planning activities in the state of Georgia, and is a nationwide resource for supporting cancer research studies.

 

JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • The Senior Academic Research Scientist is recognized as an authority in the scientific field both inside and outside of Emory University and requires significant achievements in leadership and recognition in support of Emory research or translational science or original scientific research together with a demonstrated ability to manage major components of the Emory scientific mission.
  • Duties will include designing, developing, and conducting laboratory or translational research experiments, as well as overseeing and managing all technical aspects of the laboratory.
  • The Senior Academic Research Scientist will monitor quality control and recommend new processes or equipment to help improve laboratory operations.
  • The Senior Academic Research Scientist will be expected to assist in grant and other funding applications as necessary and appropriate, and will be expected to have significant authorship on publications.
  • May have supervisory responsibilities.
  • Performs other responsibilities as required.

ADDITIONAL JOB DETAILS:

  • The organization is seeking a senior scientist to collaborate on the growth of surveillance activities and the support of cancer epidemiology research projects. The candidate will have the opportunity to work on several collaborative studies of cancer incidence and recurrence, social and health care factors, and molecular factors as they contribute to cancer incidence, outcomes and disparities. 
  • The candidate is expected to increase their operational, methodological and substantive knowledge of cancer surveillance systems and cancer epidemiology, build skills for developing and leading research studies, and have opportunities to oversee trainee projects. They will perform population health research activities, including developing and implementing research protocols, performing data analyses, preparing manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals, delivering presentations at scientific meetings, assisting in the development of grant proposals, and providing other research and methodological support for existing and ongoing studies. Opportunities to develop and write funding proposals are also available.
  • The candidate will be under the supervision of Dr. Kevin Ward and will have the opportunity to collaborate with study investigators at Emory School of Public Health, Winship Cancer Institute, and the American Cancer Society. 
  • The initial appointment is for one year, renewal expected if progress is satisfactory, and funds are available. The candidate will be based at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, with a start date of August 1, 2024. Salary and benefits will be commensurate with experience.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • PhD or MD and fifteen years of professional level experience in a technical or research lab.
  • Laboratory experience will be based on area of assignment.
  • Internship experience or experience prior to attaining the qualifying degree is not considered eligible work experience for this job classification.
  • NOTE: Applicants applying with a M.D. or equivalent degree must be eligible for a Georgia medical license to meet the minimum qualifications.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • PhD in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, or other relevant quantitative field
  • Demonstrated knowledge of registry operations and experience working with registry data
  • Expertise in data management and analyses using SAS and R
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to foster a good working relationship with others
  • Demonstrated experience in developing manuscripts for publication

  • Interests: Cancer and social epidemiology, cancer surveillance, administrative health data sets, epidemiologic methods, molecular epidemiology, health equity
