The Seasonal Creel Clerk will assist in a collaboration among UM’s Center for Integrated Research on the Environment (CIRE), the US Air Force, and the Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit at the University of Nebraska—Lincoln to assess long term social-ecological angler behavior and patterns at the Base Lake on Offutt Air Force Base in Bellevue, Nebraska.  The Creek Clerk will interview anglers at the Base Lake to identify how anglers influence fish communities and how these fish communities respond to angling.  The research-nature of this project requires that interviews occur on randomly selected days within each month (April-November). The assigned work schedule will vary from week to week. Interviews must be performed on week days and weekend days, as well as on holiday weekends (July 4, Memorial Day, and Labor Day). Each day will consist of an 8-hour shift in either the morning or the afternoon. The creel survey position starts April 1st and runs through November 10th, 2024.  Training will occur in mid-March; exact dates TBD.

Major Duties Include:

  • Primary responsibilities of the position are interviewing anglers at the Base Lake and entering data into a centralized database.
  • Providing weekly updates to CIRE project manager at the University of Montana.

The Creel Clerk will work closely with University of Montana faculty and staff, researchers at the Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit, and Air Force property managers.


Required Skills
  • Meet requirements for University of Montana employment including a background check.
  • Must be legally able to work on Department of Defense properties.
  • Ability to interact with individuals and special interest groups with diverse and potentially conflicting viewpoints regarding natural and cultural resource management priorities.

Minimum Required Experience
  • High school diploma
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Ability to gain contractor level DoD security clearance

Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity working in highly structured organizations, such as governmental agencies, the military or corporations, with established lines of authority, procedures and protocols.
  • Experience working on a natural resources-based research project.
  • Knowledge of fishing and ability to communicate with the public.
