SE- CAS, CRAFT Scholars Peer Mentor

Summary

Peer mentors are undergraduate students majoring in Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, or Math, Sociology or Criminology who have completed two years and will be a junior or senior in Fall 2024, with at least two semesters remaining before graduation. Peer mentors provide support for students in our program to develop their future identities, being role models and examples of success in their respective majors at Barry, and sharing their background and path to achievement of their own academic goals. During the academic year, mentors will have bi-weekly one-on-one meetings with up to six students, attend and help plan extra-curricular program activities with the faculty mentor. Peer mentors MUST attend one paid, 3-hour period of training in August 2024 (scheduling to be arranged). Peer mentors will work up to 8 hours per week during the academic year. Note: This position is paid for from a federal grant, therefore the applicants must be US Citizens or permanent residents.



Essential Functions
  • Meet at least every other week with first-year students one-on-one or in small groups to discuss and help with course content, college transition, and give advice on study and time management strategies and being an active and engaged member of the CRAFT Scholars community.

  • Attend and help the faculty mentor in planning field trips and other extracurricular and community-building activities. Encourage Scholars to attend, and attend with them whenever possible, on-campus events related to CRAFT Scholars (e.g. seminars)

  •  Help students engage in the Spring Break cohort trip, and attend and help students engage in the planetary and local health project in Spring semester.

  • Attend mandatory, paid 3-hour period of peer mentor training in August 2024.

  • Be reasonably available for mentees to contact you with questions and advice.


Qualifications/Requirements

  •  Must have good time management skills, be punctual and accountable. Must be committed to the success of others and provide a good example of engagement and academic achievement.

  • Must have a minimum 3.0 CGPA, Major in Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Math, Criminology or Sociology.
