Position Summary

The UNM Art Department is seeking a self-motivated, highly organized individual with shop management experience and exemplary interpersonal skills, both orally and in writing, to fill a staff position as the Lab Manager for the Sculpture & Expanded Practice Area. It is essential that the Lab Manager be committed to creating a sense of belonging in the facilities for our diverse community of students and faculty.

The Lab Manager will oversee and manage the day-to-day technical, educational, and research support activities of the Sculpture Area in the Department of Art. This includes ensuring smooth and efficient functioning of the labs including responsibility for the safe use and maintenance of equipment, timely material purchases for courses, and research support in an interdisciplinary Sculpture Area that emphasizes traditional and non-traditional approaches to Sculptural production, including wood, metal, fiber, mold-making, digital fabrication, small scale metal work and installation.

The Lab Manager will be the central point of liaison with other UNM units and external constituencies to resolve day-to-day matters concerning the labs. The selected individual will also be responsible for monitoring revenues and expenses of the Sculpture Area and being cost-effective in purchasing materials and supplies. The successful candidate will have the ability to create a safe and welcoming environment, exemplary interpersonal skills, strong organizational skills, and the ability to problem-solve and make decisions based on sound judgment.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a directly related field; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
  • MFA in Art studio with an emphasis in Sculpture
  • 3 years' experience working in a University Sculpture Shop
  • The ability to work with Excel software.
  • Demonstrated interest and commitment to current area course offerings and interdisciplinary approaches to sculpture and new technologies.
  • Commitment to fostering an inclusive environment that is welcoming and empathetic to others.
  • Highly skilled with woodworking and metal facilities and at least 1 of the following additional facilities: mold-making/casting, small-scale metals, and/or digital fabrication tools
  • Experience training others in safety and basic use of equipment
