Description

 

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Department of Med - Preventive Medicine, is seeking a Scientist I. The primary responsibility of the Scientist I is to conduct individually directed research, develop novel strategies for PET imaging in the core facility that can be extended to University researchers, and provide scientific and technical support for conducting research involving in vivo preclinical studies.

General Responsibilities

  • To employ a broad knowledge of principles, practices and procedures in a particular field of specialization.
  • To plan, coordinate and conduct research.

 

Key Duties & Responsibilities  

  • Following instructions and discussions with the principal investigator, designing research protocols, including developing and extending procedures for the collection, verification, and management of data. This includes conducting literature searches related to the research project.
  • Production of radionuclides, performing separation and purification including target preparation, setting optimum parameters, preparing purification materials, and performing purity tests.
  • Providing training to trainees and staff for cell culture techniques, cell studies, and biochemical assays such as ELISA, flow cytometry, and immunohistochemistry.
  • Developing novel imaging strategies especially including biological approaches.
  • Performing small animal studies such as tumor implantation, radiolabeled vehicle injection, PET/CT imaging, and biodistribution.
  • Performing advanced and quantitative imaging analysis including preparation of images for presentations and publications.
  • Writes manuscripts and submits papers based on projects he leads, performs, and organizes. Also, submitting abstracts to scientific meetings.
  • Communicating with collaborators, organizing experiments, and making presentations to share the data.
  • Learns how to write grant applications.
  • Plans, coordinates and conducts scientific research requiring judgment in the independent evaluation, selection, and substantial adaptation and modification of standard scientific techniques, writes grant applications, carries projects to completion and supervises/trains employees and students.
  • Designs, performs and/or oversees experiments and data collection to ensure data integrity, quality control and protocol compliance.
  • Collects, analyzes and interprets data; prepares statistical and narrative reports and/or graphs.
  • Supervises and/or performs equipment maintenance, operations and quality control procedures.
  • Performs and/or oversees new research procedures.
  • Serves as principal investigator on sub-projects of complexities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Annual Salary Range   $63,125.00 - $68,000.00

     

    Qualifications

     
    • Doctor of Philosophy, D.V.M. or M.D. degree in a related field and two (2) years of related experience  
    • OR  M.D. and Master's degree.  
    • OR  Master's degree and four (4) years of related experience  
    • OR  Bachelor's degree and six (6) years of related experience 

    Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement. 

     

    Preferences

    • Degree: Ph.D. (Chemistry, radiochemistry, biochemistry, biology, physics)
    • Good and recent publication records in the field of radiochemistry and molecular imaging are preferred.
    • Experience with oral and poster presentations in scientific meetings.
