Job Summary

Reporting to the Beckman Division Director and Administrator, the Scientific Writing Specialist with collaborate with faculty to become familiar with research conducted in the Beckman Institute and using advanced writing skills, will draft letters of support, grants, proposals, and requests for funding.

Essential Job Duties

  • Maintain expert familiarity with research programs and focus areas of the Beckman Institute and faculty working in related fields.
  • Establish connections with key Caltech departments (Advancement and Alumni Relations, Office of Sponsored Research, Foundation Relations, Corporate Partnerships) and with outside funding sources to identify external funding opportunities in those areas.
  • Proactively collaborate with faculty to develop strategies to compete effectively for funding opportunities, draft and edit proposals and oversee the grant application process.
  • Initiate and lead workshops aimed at increasing skills in science writing, communication and grantsmanship among Caltech graduate students and postdocs.
  • Collaborate with faculty, grad students and postdocs to provide editorial support on scientific manuscripts.

 Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related field, with 4 years of related experience and a record of academic publications, with familiarity in academic publishing.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Previous experience in grant writing and pre-award management with proven success in obtaining grants.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, strong organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Able to work independently; initiative driven and detail oriented.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in related field.
  • Project management experience.
  • Administrative experience.
