As one of the newest, most advanced synchrotron light sources in the world, National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) enables its growing research community to study materials with nanoscale resolution and exquisite sensitivity by providing cutting-edge capabilities. This facility is open to users from academia and industry. Its operations coincide with a moment when the world is entering a new era with a global economy driven predominantly by scientific discoveries and technological innovations.

Position Description

The CHX (11-ID) beamline at the National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) is exploring techniques in ghost and quantum imaging for the development of novel X-ray characterization techniques that provide improved resolution and contrast with a reduction of X-ray dose. The ultimate goal of the project is the application of these techniques for bioimaging sensitive materials with reduced dose. This position offers an opportunity to research on the frontier of X-ray quantum optics with collaborators across a broad range of disciplines, including physics, computer science, and biology.

Brookhaven National Laboratory and the Energy and Photon Sciences Directorate are committed to your success. We offer a supportive work environment and the resources necessary for you to succeed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assisting in the experimental design and data collection of ghost and quantum imaging experiments at NSLS-II
  • Maintaining, extending, and optimizing Python-based data analysis codes
  • Developing simulations and numerical methods of X-ray ghost imaging processes

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • B.S. in Physics, Material Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related science or engineering discipline
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Python for data science and analysis techniques
  • Knowledge of X-ray imaging and/or diffraction techniques

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • M.S. in Physics, Material Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related science of engineering discipline
  • Experience with non-linear optics, such as spontaneous parametric down conversion, especially in the X-ray regime
  • Experience performing experiments at a synchrotron beamline

Other Information:

  • On-site or Hybrid work arrangement.
  • Position is a one-year term.

Brookhaven Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. The salary range for this position is $68950 - $87563 / year. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
