About SIPS: The CALS School of Integrative of Plant Science (SIPS) encompasses five fields: Horticulture, Plant Biology, Plant Breeding & Genetics, Plant Pathology and Plant-Microbe Biology, and Soil and Crop Sciences. Combined there are 100+ faculty, ~200 undergraduate majors, 200+ graduate students in six fields, and 600+ other employees located in Ithaca, Geneva, and other satellite locations across New York State. The School offers the multidisciplinary undergraduate major in the Plant Sciences and is also home to the Agricultural Sciences major. School faculty also contribute to the Biology, Global Development, and Viticulture & Enology majors.

Position Summary

The Cornell Small Farms Program engages in research and extension projects and creates resources to support anyone farming or seeking to farm in NYS. This individual will serve as Lead Coordinator of a new project, which aims to support and connect Asylum Seekers with careers and livelihoods in New York State. In this role, the project lead will work to increase awareness and training opportunities for individuals seeking employment in the New York State agricultural industry. Specific tasks include collaboration with service provider agencies to host (virtual and in-person) educational events/workshops for employment seekers and creating efficient strategies to connect job seekers with employment opportunities. This position will require the ability and willingness to connect with diverse groups of Asylum Seekers currently residing in New York City.

This is a Temporary Six-Month, 40-hour-a-week term appointment. Salary is $67,926.00

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.

  • Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

  • Experience incorporating the perspectives of multiple communities, including communities of color. 

  • Experience working with diversity, equity, inclusion, and wellbeing programs. 

  • Passionate about working in an organization that values and promotes diversity, equity, inclusion, anti-racism, and wellbeing.

  • Ability to serve as an advocate for individuals of all ethnicities, genders, ages, and backgrounds. 

  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members. 

  • Knowledge of the U.S. Immigration system with experience working directly with Asylum Seekers, Refugees, and/or Migrants.

  • Specify minimum education and experience equivalency.

  • Bachelor’s degree in agriculture, communication, education, natural resources, arts, or a related field.

  • At least 3 years’ experience as an educator, in either formal or informal settings.

  • Demonstrated Project Management experience.

  • Must be personable and flexible, with excellent organizational, time management, and customer service skills.

  • Must be comfortable working in an environment where change in process is the norm.

  • Good working knowledge of current software, such as WordPress, Zoom, Microsoft Office, and Google Tools, and posses the ability to quickly learn new platforms.

  • Must be willing to travel within New York State, most frequently the New York City metropolitan area.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Specify preferred qualifications.

  • Masters degree in agriculture, natural resources, or related field preferred.

  • Experience working with diverse farmers in urban environments.

  • Minimum of 3 years direct experience providing services to beginning farmers strongly preferred.

  • Bilingual (especially Spanish/English) fluency strongly preferred.
