The Moores School of Music (MSM) at the Kathrine G. McGovern College of the Arts is now accepting applications for a nine-month position as a Music Scholar in Residence at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts (CWMCA) for the 2024-2025 academic year. The successful candidate will teach a 1/1 course load (one course each semester), initiate interdisciplinary projects and/or performances with CWMCA and MSM students and faculty, and vigorously pursue their creative/scholarly activities.

The position of Music Scholar in Residence is designed for a post-graduate candidate of the highest caliber in their respective field with a strong interest in interdisciplinary studies. The candidate’s primary musical expertise may be in composition, performance, musicology, or music theory. The ideal candidate will have the ability to teach in the areas of music and interdisciplinary arts.
Applicants should have definitive interdisciplinary interests they wish to pursue while a Scholar in Residence. We welcome candidates whose experience in teaching, performance, research, or community service has prepared them for interdisciplinary collaboration and will contribute to our commitment to diversity and excellence. 
The Music Scholar in Residence in Music will:

  • ·     Be based in Houston for the duration of the residency
  •       Teach one course per semester (1/1) in either MUSI (Music) or IARTS (Interdisciplinary Arts), to be decided in discussion with the Directors of Music & IARTS
  • ·     In the Fall semester, create and execute at least one MSM performance or interdisciplinary project in collaboration with music students and/or faculty
  • ·     In the Spring semester, create and execute an interdisciplinary community engagement event, performance or project through CWMCA in collaboration with students and/or faculty from music and at least one other discipline; coordinate documentation of the  project for CWMCA archives
  • ·     Mentor students who are doing interdisciplinary work
  • ·     Meet monthly with the Director of the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts and the other CWMCA Scholars to address the
    connection of their activities to the goals/vision of CWMCA, and plan activities with this group that highlight collaboration
  • ·     Attend CWMCA & MSM events, particularly those involving students and faculty they are collaborating with
  • ·     Serve as community ambassador for the Mitchell Center and Music Department
  • ·     Give a presentation at one of the weekly Tuesday Recitals within the first month of the residency that serves to introduce them and their work to the MSM community.  

This position is a nine-month appointment with a salary of $45,000 and a $1500 budget for project support.

Qualifications

: 

Applicants must have completed a graduate degree in music. Applicants should have definitive interdisciplinary research interests they wish to pursue while a Scholar in Residence.
