Department Summary

The Department of Education Studies (EDST) in the University of Oregon (UO) College of Education (COE) offers undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral programs to a diverse student body. EDST has a large teacher licensure program (UOTeach) that admits over 100 students each year to earn their master's in education degree and teacher licensure. EDST licensure and degree programs prepare professionals to use the best research-based practices to teach children and adult learners. The faculty in the Department of Education Studies is very diverse in terms of research interests and specializations, with award recognition for scholarship, teaching, and service.

The Sapsik'ʷałá (Teacher) Education Program is located in the Department of Education Studies (EDST) in the University of Oregon's (UO) College of Education. The program's purpose is to recruit, train, and support American Indian/Alaska Native (Al/AN) students who will earn their teacher licensure at UO and engage in service payback as teachers in schools that have a high proportion of Al/AN students.

The Sapsik'ʷałá Program is managed by the Oregon Education Science Lab (OESL). The Oregon Educational Science Laboratory (OESL) is a Grant Management Unit (GMU) in the College of Education dedicated to the discovery of new models, methods, and measures that substantially improve equity and inclusion in K-16 education. OESL supports the development, submission, and management of external research grants with a special focus on STEM education involving inclusive and culturally responsive practices.

Position Summary

The purpose of this position is to provide culturally sustaining leadership in the day-to-day operations of the Sapsik'ʷałá Program as part of a small but highly energetic, rigorously productive, and detail-oriented team that has big dreams for the settler-focused University of Oregon's College of Education to become the nation's leader for Indigenous Education. The program, operated as a consortium with the nine federally recognized Tribes of Oregon, recruits, trains, and places highly qualified K-12 American Indian/Alaska Native (AIAN) teachers in schools with a high proportion of AIAN students. The Sapsik'ʷałá Project Coordinator will regularly contact local, state, and national colleagues and partners in Indigenous education, Tribal communities, and education stakeholders. This work takes place at the University of Oregon, a predominantly white institution that our program is seeking to help transform in meaningful and sustainable ways so that our program may fully support Indigenous self-determination in education.

Essential responsibilities will include: managing student, alumni, and prospective student information, coordinating and tracking grant funds in collaboration with a university grant management unit, supervising and ensuring compliance of the federal payback system with students and employers, managing the recruitment and application process with all prospective applicants, managing the revision and updating of recruitment materials and program communications, managing quarterly Tribal Advisory Council meetings, providing support (social, cultural, and emotional) for current students, collaborating with Education Studies faculty and staff to support student success, and serving as an active leader in the program to accelerate the College of Education's mission to be a leader in Indigenous Education. If opportunities arise to support students earning licensure in Special Education, then the position will also interface with the Special Education licensure program and personnel.

This position requires presence in the program home office at the University of Oregon main campus in Eugene, Oregon on Kalapuya Ilihi. Some travel, evening, and weekend work is required due to the heavy emphasis on centering student need and engaging in community outreach that program success requires.

The position is funded by a federal grant and reports to the Sapsik'ʷałá Program Director and to the Sapsik'ʷałá grant Pl.
