Job Summary
Performs inspections of buildings and/or facilities for conformance to environmental and occupational safety and health standards. Also assist with the operation of university facilities.
Duties & Responsibilities

  • Makes inspections of buildings and physical facilities to determine conformance to safety and health codes, standards, or regulations. Ensures the safe working environment within the research labs.
  • Makes reports of inspections with recommendation for any required repairs or modifications.
  • Assists with lab cleanouts including the moving of equipment and chemicals, and coordinating the removal of unwanted chemicals with DRS.
  • Coordinates and directs all custodial and maintenance requests for SMCB within established budget limits.
  • Prepares recommendations for improvements of facilities necessary to maintain efficient operation.
  • Prepares annual or other periodic reports on operation of the facilities.
  • Responds to after-hours security and facilities maintenance emergencies.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned to further the mission of the School.

Additional Physical Demands
A majority of the work will be taking place in the research laboratories of MCB where there are open chemical containers being utilized. Must be able to work with and handle highly volatile chemicals. Appropriate PPE must be worn at all times in labs including closed toed shoes, gloves, eye wear and lab coat. This position requires standing for long periods of time, walking, reaching, bending and heavy lifting on a frequent basis. Work in chemical storeroom environment stocking shelves, receiving goods, filling solvent containers and helping with physical inventory.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in occupational health and safety, environmental engineering, environmental health, safety engineering, industrial hygiene, or a closely related field. One (1) year (12 months) of professional work experience in a safety or compliance related field.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Three (3) years experience in a chemical laboratory.
  • Received Certified Chemical Hygiene Officer certificate.
  • General lab safety training including: PPE, Chemical handling, Hazard label recognition and Hazardous spill response.
  • Ability to prioritize work with disciplined time management to thrive in a multi-tasking and dynamic environment to ensure tasks are completed in a timely and organized manner.
  • A high level of proficiency with Microsoft Office desktop products.
  • Excellent communication skills are required for maintaining good relations with all members of the campus community, under a wide variety of circumstances.
  • Ability to communicate complex, technical information/data in a user-friendly format is essential including trouble-shooting computer problems as need for customers.
  • Knowledge of chemical cataloging information (Chemical names, formulas, CAS numbers).
  • Awareness of, and sensitivity to, cultural and linguistic differences. Commitment to diversity and inclusion
  • Recognize and understand chemical label markings.
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety procedures and chemical handling.
  • Knowledge of using computer applications including Excel.
  • Knowledge of using chemical inventory systems including ChemSW.
  • Establishing and maintaining positive and effective relationships with all levels of supervision, management, and faculty is essential.
  • Able to work alone and within a team to accomplish daily tasks.
Appointment Information
This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 2793 - Safety/Environmental Compliance Specialist position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the deadline date. The starting salary for this position is $39,488. Final salary offered will be determined by a thorough assessment of available market data, internal salary equity, candidate experience and qualifications, collective bargaining agreements, and budget constraints. Sponsorship for work authorization is not available for this position.
