JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Penn State Center for Dirt & Gravel Road Studies is seeking a Roads Program Coordinator (Extension Associate 2). The successful candidate will be responsible for providing technical assistance, training, and outreach to the Commonwealth’s Dirt, Gravel & Low-Volume Roads Program. The Roads Program Coordinator will be responsible for providing educational trainings, direct on-site and remote technical assistance, and oversight of projects for a variety of public stakeholders throughout the Commonwealth of PA relating to the maintenance of dirt, gravel, and paved low-volume roads.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist conservation districts and local municipalities with planning, implementation, and oversight of a wide variety of road projects, including stream crossing assessments and installations.

  • Deliver the Center’s 2-day Environmentally Sensitive Maintenance roads course and update educational training programs and training materials.

  • Organize and lead workshops, field demonstrations, and tours for the benefit of public road owning entities, governmental agencies, and stakeholders.

Who Should Apply

This position typically requires a master’s degree or higher and at least two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Degrees in environmental-related or engineering-related fields, as well as experience with stream crossing replacements, stream bank stabilization, and stream hydrology, are strongly preferred.

This position is specifically tailored for candidates who can deliver technical assistance and oversight of road design and construction projects while working both independently and in teams. This position is well suited to candidates with backgrounds in transportation, construction, engineering, or environmental sciences who are seeking to apply those skills to a variety of complex road maintenance projects. The successful candidate must be self-motivated. In addition, the Roads Program Coordinator will be expected to interact with a variety of audiences and must exhibit excellent interpersonal, verbal, written, and presentation skills.

Additional Information

This is a limited-term appointment, funded for one year from date of hire, with an excellent possibility of renewal.

This position requires a significant amount of travel within Pennsylvania, including overnight stays. This position requires that you operate a motor vehicle as part of your job duties. A valid driver’s license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks. This position also requires the following clearances: PA State Police Criminal Background Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance Form, and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Fingerprint Criminal Background Check.
