  3 12 hour Shifts/Week, Days with every other weekend and share of holidays

Location:  University Hospital, Columbia, MO

Salary:  $36.19-$52.67/hr, based on applicable RN/LPN experience

For a limited time, sign-on bonuses of $20,000 will be available to eligible candidates for this position on a first-come, first-serve basis. Bonuses will be paid after successful candidates complete all pre-employment verifications and start in their new roles.

DETAILED JOB DESCRIPTION

Review all documented pressure injuries, tracheostomies, and new ostomates for inpatient population. Provide skin/ostomy related consultation as ordered/needed. Perform focused skin assessment and work with the appropriate care teams/disciplines to develop and implement treatment plans per established protocol. Record, report, and interpret the patient’s response to the plan of care. Perform re-evaluations as needed.

Track inpatients with ostomies. Assess stomas, provide patient and caregiver education as needed, and ensure proper use of dressings, supplies, and equipment. Deliver pre-operative stoma marking, address problems with appliance adherence or peristomal skin problems, and refit as needed. Conduct post-surgical teaching for new ostomates in preparation for discharge. Work with supply companies to set up patient for support post-discharge.

Provide individualized discharge planning, depending on the patient’s medical, physical, and social needs in coordination with the care team. Discuss realistic expectations of wound healing, functional level, appropriate level of assistance required by patient, and anticipated rehabilitation progression.

Develop and implement evidence-based standards of practice, with educational programs for staff and other healthcare providers. Deliver patient and caregiver education for pressure relief, appropriate positioning, skin care, and frequent skin checks. Play an integral role in tracking, treating, and preventing pressure injuries within the hospital. This includes identifying root causes of such injuries and teaching staff the prevention of such injuries.

Follow documentation of wound assessments by nursing and review charting to ensure it is timely and thorough, supporting protocols/guidelines. Routinely review wound care outcome measures and report findings to supporting teams to evaluate program effectiveness. Provide nail trimming when deemed needed for quality patient care.

Participate in tracking of number and types of consults performed by the team. Generate reports and share with clinical leadership.

Participate in data collection for National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators. Participate in the education of nursing staff regarding skin care, dressing recommendations, and ostomy care. These include, but are not limited to, nurse residency programs, education modules, and other educational opportunities that arise. Educate members of different disciplines, including, but not limited to physicians, PT/OT, nurses, and dietitian students, to expand on staff knowledge of wound care and ostomy care.

Review, trial, and educate regarding new products to the hospital when opportunity arises. Actively participate in the introduction of new products to the staff and works with vendors of products. May complete unit/department specific duties as outlined in department documents.

 

Qualifications

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Missouri Board of Nursing RN or Nurse Licensure Compact multi-state RN. When primary state of residency changes, compact state RNs must apply under new state of residency within thirty (30) days.

One (1) year of acute care and/or operating room RN experience

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Certification by the Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nursing Certification Board (WOCNCB).

Additional license/certification requirements as determined by the hiring department.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met with or without reasonable accommodation. The performance of these physical demands is an essential function of the job. This position is very active and requires ambulating, reaching, and moving objects weighing up to and over 20 lbs. This role also routinely comes into contact with patients who may have contagious illnesses. This position is in a health care facility open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Rotating shifts as well as holiday and work during inclement weather will be required.
