Position Focus:

In 1971, Yale University became one of the first universities in the U.S. to provide healthcare services to its faculty, staff, and students. Today, Yale Health, a not-for-profit organization, serves more than 47,000 members of the Yale community and their families with more than 150 board-certified healthcare providers. Most care and services are provided in our state-of-the-art, facility, with modern exam rooms, an Acute Care, an inpatient facility, a diagnostic imaging suite, and a full-service retail pharmacy.

The Dermatology nurse assumes responsibility for triage, assessment, care-coordination, follow up and transitional care, clinical evaluation and clinical decision making for the assigned population and unit.  Assumes responsibility for prioritization of care and disposition of patients from both telephonic encounters as well as scheduled and unscheduled in person encounters. Compliance with nursing principles, medication safety and adherence to scope of practice is a fundamental expectation. The Clinical Nurse utilizes the nursing process of assessment, planning, intervention and evaluation while caring for our patients maintaining confidentiality and dignity. The Clinical Nurse provides safe, effective evidenced based care tailored to the individual needs of the patient and family. As a core member of the care delivery team, the Clinical Nurse partners with the team to facilitate the coordination of patient care at the unit level utilizing the principles of patient/family centered care. Ensures clinical policies and procedures are consistently followed, initiates new policy when appropriate.  Role includes initiatives and services that support organizational and strategic goals.  RN role serves to support clinicians and all members of the care team to prioritize and anticipate patient care needs.  Fosters ongoing improvements of service and a culture that prioritizes safety. Role requires the ability to interface with key clinical partners, ability to make difficult decisions and facilitate resolution. Additional responsibilities include:

Collaborates with members of the multidisciplinary team to support the work of the team, unit activities, and the accomplishment of positive patient outcomes. Delegates responsibilities to appropriate members of the care delivery team based upon an understanding of others'' roles, scope of practice, knowledge, and capabilities to ensure optimal utilization of personnel. Contributes to a positive work environment by being responsive to the need for change. Maintains a collaborative work relationship with staff members through respect and recognition of cultural and human diversity. Successfully completes the competency based orientation within designated time frame. Identifies self-learning needs and actively participates in meeting them in collaboration with the leadership team. Sets and achieves professional goals. Delivers excellence in patient care through compliance with all patient safety and regulatory initiatives. Communicates in a calm professional manner with patients, families, colleagues, members of the care team, and other hospital personnel, accepts and elicits feedback, and works toward resolving problems and clarifying issues and concerns. Uses resources in a fiscally sound manner. Compliance with University, State and federal healthcare regulations.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing. 


Required Skill/Ability 1:

Previous nursing experience with demonstrated ability to multitask and prioritize using the nursing process in a high volume out-patient environment.


Required Skill/Ability 2:

Competent clinical triage skills and critical thinking skills. Current CPR.


Required Skill/Ability 3:

Evidence of maintenance of professional skill and competency, attendance at educational programs such as seminars and workshops that are appropriate to the field.


Required Skill/Ability 4:

Outstanding interpersonal skills, ability to communicate and excellent written skills.


Required Skill/Ability 5:

Computer proficiency as it relates to the use of an EMR.


Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Dermatology RN experience. Demonstrated experience in an in-patient hospital unit in relevant specialty. Experience of at least two years in a medical/surgical unit, ambulatory care, primary care (sub-acute facility) or a college health center.  Active membership in professional organizations.


Required Licenses or Certifications

Licensure as a registered nurse in the State of Connecticut.


Physical Requirements

May require prolonged standing, walking, use of sight, hearing and touch, moving/lifting patients of varying weights. Requires keyboard use and ability to sit in front of a computer screen for long periods of time.
