Job Description

The primary role of the Research Advancement Admin. Principal is to provide direct support to research investigators within the School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning (SGSUP) within The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (The College). The RAA Principal will support in the area of proposal preparation and submission and serve as a liaison across campus between colleges, schools, departments and principal investigators in their interactions with the Office of Research and Sponsored Project Administration (ORSPA), as well as assisting with higher level post-award functions. As a professional level representative, this role is positioned to have a supervisory & leadership responsibility within the unit as well as mentoring collaboration. Essential Duties

  • Provides pre-award technical support for the School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning (SGSUP).
  • Reviews funding announcements and provides recommendations on eligibility and sponsor requirements and documents support towards successful proposal submission.
  • Prepares sponsor budgets in accordance with sponsor guidelines and assists Principal Investigators (PIs) with budget and budget justification requests.
  • Assists and completes other sponsor-required forms and documents, and review for compliance, such as current and pending support, biosketches, facilities, data management, etc.
  • Advises subrecipients on the completion and submission of documents and needed documentation and timeline.
  • Verifies cost share requirements and coordinates processes to gather required approvals.
  • Finalizes and uploads proposal files for submission through institutional and sponsor submission systems such as system-to-system, Research.gov, NSPIRES, ASSIST, Grants.gov Workspace, PAMS, proposalCENTRAL, and other portals as required.
  • Establishes and leads award mgmt. processes such as "hand-off" of awarded proposals to supervised post-award staff, expenditure monitoring, reconciliation and reporting.
  • Assists with post-submission action items requested by the sponsor such as Just-in-Time requests, revised budgets, significant scope of work modifications, certifications, etc.
  • Provides training on areas of expertise and communicates key information, updates, policy changes, etc. during staff leadership or faculty meetings.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a related field. Seven years’ experience in any combination of the following areas: proposal submissions, contract negotiation, grant and contract administration and financial administration, OR Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skill and abilities have been achieved.


Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in pre-award proposal support. (5 years)
  • Ability to facilitate resolution of highly complex sponsored project issues.
  • Experience in coordinating communication to a variety of sponsors.
  • Experience with ASU's Enterprise Research Administration (ERA) system or similar.
  • Demonstrated knowledge with relevant computer applications: Microsoft Office, Workday or similar, analytics reporting, PeopleSoft or similar, FastLane/Research.gov, Grants.gov, NIH eRA Commons.
  • Experience in preparing/reviewing complex and detailed documents, proposals, reports, and/or related materials.
  • Experience in making independent judgements and decisions.
  • Experience in prioritization and time management skills.
  • Evidence of effective communication skills.
  • Experience in training and/or mentoring staff.
  • Evidence of a CRA or other qualified research administration certification.

Working Environment

  • Activities are primarily performed in a regular, climate-controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting. Use office equipment including a desktop computer.

  • Work both independently or within a complex structured team.
