Job Description:
Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

The Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center at Iowa State University offers a residency program in Small Animal Internal Medicine designed to prepare residents for board certification by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine in the specialty of Internal Medicine. The residency program is three years in duration.  Renewal through 7/14/2027 will be based on continued funding. A concurrent Master of Science degree is also available.
There are currently 4 ACVIM diplomates in direct support of our small animal internal medicine residency. In addition to this, ACVIM diplomates in oncology and cardiology operate their respective services. Residents spend the majority of their program on the internal medicine service, which operates as 2 concurrent services that alternate receiving and transfer/workup days. We see a diverse caseload ranging from more basic secondary referrals to more complicated tertiary level cases providing residents with a good foundation along with the capacity to handle more challenging cases. Our residents have a robust training in a variety of respiratory and gastrointestinal endoscopic techniques as well as urinary procedures including cystoscopy, urethral collagen injection, ectopic ureter laser ablation, laser lithotripsy, and urethral/ureteral stenting. Management of ICU cases is aided by the oversight of 4 ACVECC diplomates. After-hours responsibilities of residents include providing backup support for ICU interns related to medicine cases as well as performing emergency endoscopic procedures. Residents have required rotations through radiology, clinical pathology and elective rotations are available with many other services including cardiology, oncology, emergency and critical care, and anesthesia. Weekly didactic training includes journal club, boards preparation sessions, and optional critical care rounds. In addition, our residents participate in monthly morbidity and mortality rounds, and various section and departmental seminars. Internal medicine graduate courses are provided for those residents enrolled in an MS program.

Required Minimum Qualifications:
