Minimum Qualifications | Master’s Degree Valid Driver’s License required. |
Preferred Qualifications | Masters degree in Student Personnel, Higher Education, Counseling or related field. Prior residence hall experience preferred. Teaching experience preferred. |
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities | Strong written and verbal skills are essential. Training/teaching abilities in a work setting. Exceptional skills in inter-personal relationships and a sincere concern for others. Able to organize and work with student groups, both formal and informal. Managerial skills, including the ability to organize and supervise staff. Ability to work with faculty, parents, and other staff. Able to pass required criminal background check. |
Job Duties
Job Duty | Provide leadership in the development and implementation of residential learning communities designed to enhance students’ academic progress, awareness of self, and awareness of their responsibilities to others. Be knowledgeable of USC academic structures and support systems and work with academic support services to provide effective delivery of services (academic advising, career exploration, tutoring, etc.). Facilitate working partnerships with campus partners to collaboratively lead each learning community. Coordinate Community Education Teams (CETs) involving students, a variety of departmental staff, faculty and academic staff to plan, implement and assess learning experiences for residential students. Provide leadership and direction for area staff in related program development and program evaluation. Develop an understanding of the Common Courses program and provide guidance for its implementation in the hall, particularly in terms of integration with other educational efforts of the CET and integrating each cluster of residents into the larger residential environment. Advise individual residents on personal, academic, and social matters, and assist students in resolving issues that may impede their academic success. Maintain a continual awareness of resident concerns through regular student contact. Promote and ensure that student staff Resident Mentors (RMs) develop personal one-on-one relationships with residents through frequent individual meetings. Support, interpret, implement, and enforce University and departmental policies and procedures. Serve as a housing hearing officer for alleged policy violations. Conduct interviews and hearings with charged students, issue sanctions, and administer referrals. When appropriate, work with the University Police Department, Counseling Center, and other agencies on immediate response to incidents in hall. Follow-up with individual students and the community as appropriate. |

Job Duty | Community Enhancement: Create and implement inclusive, supportive communities that foster and enhance students’ learning, development and academic success. Promote diverse and appropriate developmental activities to meet the needs of residents through community introduction, interaction, involvement, influence, investment, and identity. Provide leadership and direction for hall staff in related program development and assessment of whether efforts effectively contributed to students’ learning and growth . Promote study group formation and similar strategies in accordance with initiatives designed by Residential Learning Initiatives and the Academic Centers for Excellence. Advise hall government, floor governments, and student groups in the residence hall(s) to develop and maintain effective community governance and to foster leadership opportunities for the greatest number of students. Contribute to the effectiveness of the Residence Hall Association (RHA) and the National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH) by promoting resident participation in sponsored activities. Advise CET and community leadership in conducting discussions on damages and vandalism. Be visible on floors talking informally with residents about academic, personal or community success/issues/concerns. Serve on the professional staff duty rotation. Liaison with other Student Affairs and Academic Support services and individuals. |

Job Duty | Supervision: Responsible for the recruitment, selection, and evaluation process for Resident Mentors and Conference Assistants (CAs) to meet the needs of each learning community. Facilitate and participate in departmental training programs and provide for the on-going training of RMs/CAs through planned departmental and in-house staff activities and through daily supervision. Instruct a one-hour Resident Mentor course. Supervise RMs/CAs in the performance of their responsibilities through regular individual contact, through conducting weekly staff integration in Community Education Teams(s), and through on-going evaluation of their performance. Supervise office Desk Assistants (DAs). Supervise break housing (Fall, Winter, and Spring Break) staff in assigned building/area. Supervise summer RMs/CAs in completing duties related to summer conference programs. Supervise Office Assistants. May include: 15-27 Resident Mentors, Conference Assistants, 15-40 Desk and Office staff, Graduate Assistant(s). |

Job Duty | Administrative and Building/Area Management: Coordinate the thorough, timely and accurate completion of all reports and other administrative functions per departmental standard operating procedures. Support area and departmental staff in monitoring and administering resident occupancy, desk operations and general office procedures and systems. Maintain regular/scheduled office hours. Serve as an advocate for quality management of residence hall facilities by reporting maintenance issues to facilities staff. Assist with design and implementation of residence hall/area and departmental assessment initiatives. Maintain effective desk operations through the recruitment, selection, training, supervision, and evaluation of desk staff. Coordinate and conduct health and safety inspections. Facilitate the opening and closing of the residence hall(s). Accountable for the management of hall government budget(s) and learning community budget(s). Coordinate summer conference/summer school activities and services in assigned area. Coordinate break housing services for assigned area. Support the Admissions Office, Visitor Relations, academic units, University Housing Marketing and Communications Office and Residential Learning Initiatives in recruitment initiatives. Serve in the capacity of the Assistant Director when so designated. |
