General Information

Researcher position available in the laboratory of Dr. Terje Dokland in the Department of Microbiology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. The lab employs a combination of microbial genetics, biochemistry and structural biology approaches to study various aspects of bacteriophage host range, genetic mobilization and antibiotic resistance in staphylococci and streptococci. The successful candidate will have responsibility for the day to day management of the lab, carry out independent research in support of lab goals, and collaborate with and support postdocs and students.

 

General Responsibilities

  • Assume significant responsibility for the management of the lab.
  • Set up and perform routine and established lab procedures in support of lab research goals.
  • Carry out research with minimal supervision
  • Collaborate with and support postdocs and students
  • Assist in training students and other personnel
  • Contribute to project development and publication

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Be responsible for the day to day operation and maintenance of the lab, including ordering, budgeting, lab safety, keeping chemical and strain inventories, equipment troubleshooting and maintenance.
  • Perform experiments in support of lab projects, including bacterial growth, phage purification, molecular cloning, protein purification and analysis.
  • Assist and train students and postdocs
  • Contribute to project development and publication, collect data and present results at lab meetings
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Salary

Commensurate with experience.

 

Qualifications

 

Requirements

Applicants must have a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a related field and relevant experience in biomedical research upon starting the position.

Preferences

  • Training will be provided, but strong preparative skills and some experience with standard molecular biology and protein biochemistry approaches are essential.
  • Experience with bacterial genetics, especially cloning in staphylococci and/or streptococci highly desirable
  • Strong organizational, communication and leadership skills

  • Protein purification
  • Organization, attention to detail and ability to maintain lab notes and organized inventories of bacterial strains and plasmids.
