The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Department of Microbiology, is seeking a Researcher II. 

General Responsibilities

Under minimal supervision:

  • To set up and perform routine and established lab procedures in support of lab goals.
  • To collect, enter and summarize data.
  • To monitor results and report unusual outcomes.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Performs cell culture, DNA preparations, genotyping, cellular analyses including antibody staining, flow cytometry, isolation of primary cells, cell activation, cultures infectious agents, PCR, uses molecular approaches to analyze cells of interest, and conducts other tasks as directed.
  • Prepares solutions and reagents.
  • Ensures laboratory glassware and related items are available, clean, and sterile.
  • Keeps accurate notes and records.
  • Monitors results; detects and reports unusual outcomes.
  • Analyzes data and prepares figures, slides, and reports.
  • Presents background information, plans, and results in a clear, accurate, and logical manner. This may consist of written or oral reports.
  • Assists with general lab maintenance including but not limited to routine equipment maintenance, lab organization and unpacking supplies, as well as other duties as directed.
  • Monitors supplies, inventories, and places orders.
  • Interfaces with vendors.
  • Handles payments, including invoices, PO requests, and credit card reconciliation, as well as related tasks as required.
  • Safely and humanely handles experimental animals.
  • Maintains a mouse colony. This includes but is not limited to monitoring, weaning, record keeping, specimen collection and processing, and sanitation.
  • Safely ships items to collaborators.
  • Safely works with infectious agents.
  • Safely disposes of infectious waste in accordance with all relevant policies and procedures.
  • Supervises and/or assists other lab members as needed. Is punctual, reliable, and meets deadlines.
  • Completes all required training and keeps up to date with training requirements.
  • Sets up and performs routine and established lab procedures in support of lab goals. Runs assays, cell/tissue culture, animal studies, etc.
  • Collects, enters and summarizes data.
  • Monitors results; detects and reports unusual outcomes.
  • Assists in the maintenance and troubleshooting of lab equipment and supplies.
  • Performs basic statistical data analysis.
  • Performs fundamental statistical data analysis. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Hourly Salary Range     $15.50 - $19.50

     

    Qualifications

     
    • Bachelor’s degree in a related field
    • OR Associate's degree in a related field and two (2) years of related experience
    • OR High School diploma or GED and four (4) years of related experience

    Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.

    Preferences

    • Degree in a biological science.
    • On-the-job training is available, but candidates with prior experience with flow cytometry, mouse models, infectious systems, cell culture, isolation of primary cells, PCR, and molecular biology techniques such as purification of nucleic acids, are preferred. 
    • Previous experience in a basic science lab is preferred.
