JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Pennsylvania State University is seeking a full-time Research Technologist to assist in the management of several research projects in forest ecosystems. The technologist will assist with the design and maintenance of experimental forest plots on Penn State’s Forestlands testing the capacity of forest to produce multiple ecosystem services such as carbon, wood, non-timber forest products, and wildlife habitat. The research technologist will be responsible for:

  • Ordering and maintaining supplies for fieldwork.

  • At the research sites, maintaining study plots, designing seedling planting protocol, monitoring and measuring seedlings, and measuring and map overstory trees.

  • Managing and maintaining the research laboratory and field vehicle, located on the University Park campus. 

  • Data entry, quality control, and data archiving associated with the research projects.

  • Supervise 2-3 undergraduate research assistants working part-time during the academic year and full time in the summer. 

  • Financial responsibilities include purchasing and travel logistics and approving reported work hours from undergraduate research assistant. 

This is a limited term position funded for one year from date of hire with excellent possibility of refunding. 

Education and Experience:

Minimum requirements for this position include a Bachelor’s degree in a natural resources field, with preference given to forestry degrees or knowledge in dendrology and forest measurements, and one year of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Basic knowledge of Excel, ArcGIS, and GPS use is desired.

This position requires that you operate a motor vehicle as a part of your job duties. A valid driver’s license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks.

The pay range for this position, including all possible grades is:

$38,300.00 - $55,500.00
