Work Schedule
30 hrs/wk. Monday – Friday; flexible hours between 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, with rotating weekend watering duties (approx. 1 weekend per month).
Primary Purpose of Position
The purpose of the Garden Technician may include the cultivation and care of the orchid collection and assisting with the maintenance of tropical plant (greenhouse) collections, managing the outdoor nursery, and sharing responsibilities for the semi-annual plant sales. This position assists with horticultural practices including, but not limited to, planting, weeding, watering, fertilizing, pesticide use, pruning, trail and garden equipment maintenance in the outdoor gardens. An interest and the ability to supervise and lead a small work crew of students and/or volunteers is required. Work includes collaborating with the Botanical Gardens staff, especially the horticultural team. Work requires limited work some weekends and holidays during the year for plant care as well as for special events.
Minimum Education/Experience
Required Minimum Qualifications:
Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
University Preferred Qualifications:
Graduation from high school; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Essential Job Duties
  • Maintain safe, clean, and functionally attractive display environments in the greenhouse and gardens.
  • Horticultural care of plant collections, including identifying problems and pursuing solutions.
  • Manage the outdoor plant nursery and contribute to the semi-annual plant sales.
  • Actively contribute with the horticultural team to complete tasks, meet goals and/or manage projects.
  • Full investment in and accountability to the horticultural team including role flexibility to find opportunities to learn and contribute.
  • Support the horticultural team through constant communication, active listening, and routine assistance.
  • Assist with management and maintenance of the “Research Greenhouse”.
  • Participate in Weekend Watering Duties (a rotating monthly schedule with other staff).
Other Work Responsibilities
Collaborate with other staff, volunteers and student workers on general garden/greenhouse maintenance, display renovations, plant sales and garden events.
Departmental Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
  • Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in Horticulture or Botany (or equivalent work experience) is preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of plant cultivation is required.
  • Specialized knowledge of tropical plants, particularly orchids is preferred.
  • Experience with the use of special tools, materials and utility systems typical for plant cultivation is required for this position.
