Summary of Job Duties:

The Research Technician will report directly to the Principal Investigator (PI), Dr. Neha Dole, Assistant Professor in the Department of Physiology and Cell Biology. The Research Technician will perform various specialized tasks in developing, designing, and conducting research projects/experiments in the Dole laboratory. The Research Technician will investigate and evaluate research methods and advise faculty/researchers on the optimal use of methodology and equipment. The Research Technician will perform lab experiments, including cell culture and molecular biology work, and collect, analyze, and summarize data/results in reports. The position will be involved in training users in equipment operation and research techniques; overseeing daily operations of project and laboratory, including managing project/laboratory budget, maintaining appropriate supplies, scheduling and/or performing equipment repairs and documentation for equipment/facility; serves as a technical expert for the area of specialization/laboratory. The Research Technician will collaborate with other research staff within the department to review, adapt, modify, and improve existing methodologies. The position will assist in writing proposals and obtaining grant funding as directed by the Principal Investigator (P)I; and collaborate with other research staff within and external to the unit/project to review, modify, and improve research methodologies. The Research Technician will also support general lab maintenance by ordering supplies, stocking solutions, dishwashing, sterilizing reagents and supplies, and organizing and maintaining a clean laboratory space. This person will be involved in the strategic planning of animal experimentation and make recommendations to the PI to facilitate cost savings and operational efficiencies in the laboratory work. The Research Technician must be able to organize complex projects, provide attention to detail, communicate effectively, and contribute information and ideas across all related projects. The position will ensure effective and efficient workflow and adherence to quality standards for the self and researchers within the group and maintain knowledge of the Code of Federal Regulations and the Code of Conduct for animal research.

Qualifications:

High School diploma/GED plus one (1) year of experience performing tests in a research laboratory required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Have a basic knowledge of the equipment used in a research laboratory.

  • Willing to work with, handle, and perform experiments involving laboratory mice.

  • Be able to keep organized laboratory records and notes.

  • Know how to use Microsoft Office.

  • Have good communication skills.

  • Should not have prior allergies to laboratory mice.

  • Should be able to move and clean pieces of laboratory equipment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree with college-level coursework in biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, and/or cell biology.

  • 2 to 3 years of laboratory experience.

  • Knowledge of basic immunology.


Additional Information:

Responsibilities:

  • Manage the overall organization of the research laboratory.
  • Coordinate ordering and storage of lab ware and supplies.
  • Maintain appropriate inventory and instruments that are essential to the operation of the lab.
  • Participate in strategic planning of experiments and animal work.
  • Assist in developing and implementing policies, procedures, and standards for efficient and effective lab operations.
  • Coordinate with the PI to provide budgetary oversight and provide recommendations for cost-effective and rigorous lab work.
  • Manage mouse database.
  • Maintain mouse colonies.
  • Perform mammalian cell culture and basic molecular biology techniques including PCR and qPCR, Plasmid preparation and DNA cloning, DNA and RNA extraction, Immunohistochemistry, and Western Blots.
  • Perform technical procedures related to the dissection and processing of tissues for histology, gene expression, microCT, and histomorphometry. 
  • Provide training and support to the laboratory members. 
  • Maintain good work relationships with the Director and personnel of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) at UAMS. 
  • Assist in the PI with the development and implementation of policies, compliance, and inspections
  • Maintain records of experiments including animal procedures, cell and tissue work to assure compliance of regulation. 
  • Organize data/findings for use in technical reports, documents, or oral/written presentations.
  • May perform other duties as assigned.


Salary Information:

$31,200 | $15.00/hour
