Research Senior Technician to assist and support the scientific investigation to study the molecular mechanism of tissue wound healing and remodeling in the areas of cardiovascular, pulmonary, and skeletal muscle biology as directed in the laboratory of Dr. Onur Kanisicak in the Department of Emergency Medicine; Division of Basic and Translational Research and the Davis Heart Lung Research Institute. Dr. Kanisicak’s research program focuses on the examination and manipulation of various cellular compartments within the cardiovascular and musculoskeletal systems with the overall goal of identifying novel therapeutic targets to prevent fibrosis and promote wound healing. Towards these efforts, current projects in the Kanisicak lab employ in vivo genetic interrogation methods to determine the lineage plasticity and role of tissue-resident interstitial cells involved in fibrogenesis, regeneration, and angiogenesis.

The candidate will be expected to independently conduct assigned experiments; perform a variety of molecular, cellular, and biological research techniques and procedures including PCR reactions, gel electrophoresis, western blot assays, cell culture, rodent surgeries, harvest, process, and manage rodent tissues and blood samples; test and evaluate current procedures; record, consolidate and assist with analysis of research results; assist in evaluating the validity of data obtained from experimental procedures; summarize data for inclusion in grant proposals and manuscripts; assist principal investigator with the preparation of publications, manuscripts, articles, posters, and abstracts; conduct literature research on requested topics; oversees and maintains accurate records of laboratory activities; performs routine procedures on lab animals; maintain and oversee animal breeding colonies and/or transgenic mouse colonies; assist with care of lab animals; assist with training of junior research staff, and undergraduate and graduate students in research methods and equipment operation; set up and operates laboratory equipment; monitor research supply, including specimens, inventory and initiates procurement requests as needed.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirement:

Bachelor’s Level Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in an appropriate biological/health science or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required. 1-3 years of relevant experience required.  The ability to translate, adapt, and apply academic and/or practical knowledge in the conduct of biological/health science research is required. Experience in a biological/health science research capacity is preferred. Requires successful completion of a background check; qualified candidates may be asked to complete a pre-employment physical, including a drug screen.

Essential Duties

10% Participates in the preparation of grant applications for extramural funding; participates in the preparation of manuscripts for publication; supports grant writing; performs additional duties as assigned.

20% Develops and troubleshoots new experimental techniques and protocols that benefit the general research laboratory; prepares research results for publication in reports, papers, journals, books, and other media; prepares seminars and lectures for dissemination of knowledge, particularly the result of research is undertaken; attends research reviews and seminars. Assist with training of junior research staff, and undergraduate and graduate students in research methods and equipment operations; set up and operate laboratory equipment; monitor research supply, including specimens, and inventory, and initiate procurement requests as needed; other duties as assigned.

70% Assist and support the scientific investigation to study tissue fibrosis and wound healing mechanisms utilizing mouse models as directed by the principal investigator. Independently conduct assigned experiments; perform a variety of molecular, cellular, and biological research techniques and procedures including PCR reactions, gel electrophoresis, assays, cell culture, and western analysis; sort, organize, record, and process tissue samples; test and evaluate current procedures and provide feedback to the research team; perform routine procedures on lab animals; maintains and oversees animal breeding colonies and/or transgenic mouse colonies; assist with care of lab animals; oversees and maintains accurate records of laboratory activities.
