PULMONARY (IN-PULM-IUINA)

The Indiana University School of Medicine is the largest medical school in the US and is annually ranked among the top medical schools in the US by US News & World Report. Researchers in the Division of Pulmonary Medicine at the IU School of Medicine pursue a variety of basic, translational and clinical research projects in the fields of pulmonary and critical care medicine. Studies are conducted in facilities located on the school's Indianapolis campus, its affiliated hospitals and in collaboration with investigators in other IU School of Medicine divisions and centers and at other academic institutions. Division research is funded by the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Veterans Affairs, non-profit organizations, foundations and industry.

The person in this role will work as a part of the research team and in a close cooperation or under the supervision of senior researchers to study the molecular mechanisms of pulmonary hypertension and investigate the potential therapeutic targets.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Maintains the mice and rat colonies (breeding, tagging, collecting samples for phenotyping, etc.).
  • Assists students, postdocs and senior scientists with animal surgeries, collecting and freezing animal samples.
  • Performs biochemical analysis of frozen cells and tissues (Western blotting, Elisa, other assays).
  • Analyzes obtained experimental results, preparing figures for scientific publications.
  • Operates laboratory instruments and performing equipment maintenance.
  • Follows biosafety and chemical safety protocols.
  • Assists in the development of operating procedures and guidelines.
  • Participates in weekly laboratory meeting.
  • Maintains the accurate record of performed experiments.
  • Maintains the inventories of laboratory supplies and samples.
  • Orders laboratory supplies.

General Responsibilities

  • Performs a wide variety of complex experiments and reports results
  • Keeps organized analytical data of performed experiments
  • Provides support for equipment maintenance as needed
  • Acts as a liaison to students and laboratory personnel for training
  • Maintains laboratory supply requisition and management
  • May train junior-level staff.
  • May help plan experiments or short-term goals.

This position is posted at the Intermediate Career Level but may be filled at the Foundational Career Level depending on the candidate's qualifications. Although they will be similar, the duties and responsibilities may differ if filled at the lower rank. Please see the qualifications for each level listed below.

The role regularly requires the ability to effectively communicate. The role frequently requires the ability to move about the work environment and to position oneself to operate laboratory equipment effectively. The role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds and will occasionally work near moving mechanical parts. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

Must be comfortable handling rodents and rodent samples.

Indianapolis, Indiana

Intermediate Salary Range: $38,500 - $41,500 per year based on experience.

Foundational Salary Range: $34,000 - $37,000 per year based on experience.
