Position Summary
The Zebrafish Facility is seeking applicants for a Research Technician I in the Department of Developmental Biology at Washington University School of Medicine. The Research Technician I will carry out general fish husbandry duties and other research laboratory functions.


Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Collection of data, preparation of solutions and set-up and maintenance of equipment.
  • Performs data entry and maintains data files on research.
  • Following standard operating procedures for working with zebrafish, performs the following duties which include, but are not limited to, the following:
    • Records daily light, temperature and humidity controls.
    • Records water quality which includes pH, conductivity, ammonia levels, and nitrate levels.
    • Performs daily, weekly, monthly and yearly operations to maintain the operating quality of the fish facility equipment as well as the health of the fish.
    • Ensures feedings of the adult and baby fish.
    • Maintains and harvests saltwater rotifers and stocks young zebrafish larvae on nursery system.
    • Maintains feeding labels to ensure fish are fed properly.
    • Washes and cleans/sterilizes tanks and other equipment.
    • Operates cleaning equipment including washer and autoclave.
  • Receives and stores materials and supplies.
  • Maintains close surveillance of fish health, reporting signs of illness/problems to facility supervisor.
  • Complies with established safety procedures and maintains required documentation.
  • Participates in training and continuing education.

Working Conditions/Schedule

  • Works in a laboratory environment with potential exposure to biological and chemical hazards. 
  • Must be physically able to wear protective equipment and to provide standard care to research animals.
  • Able to work in a warm and humid environment.
  • Able to lift 50 pounds.
  • Some weekends and holidays required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least 1 year of experience in Recirculation Aquatic Systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain complete and organized records/reports.
  • Working knowledge of computer software.


Required Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent high school certification.

Salary Range
$16.21 - $21.69 / Hourly

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
