The Division of Nutritional Sciences (DNS) at Cornell University is among the largest academic units in the United States devoted to human nutrition. The DNS mission and scholarly activities integrate knowledge from the physical, biological, and social sciences in the areas of molecular, human, international, and community nutrition. The program is supported by state-of-the-art facilities for both transgenic animal and human metabolic research.
The Wang lab in DNS aims to understand the metabolic and nutritional sources of DNA damage in life that can impact the risk of cancer and aging. The lab combines genetics, mass spectrometry and molecular biology in mammalian cell lines and transgenic mouse models to address fundamental questions in metabolism and DNA damage.

   

The Opportunity

The Wang lab of Molecular Nutrition in DNS is seeking a full-time Research Technician to support the active projects in the nutritional and metabolic origins of DNA damage that impacts aging and cancer.

The research will integrate molecular biology, genetic screens, and quantitative mass spectrometry. The successful candidate will work under the guidance and support of Dr. Meng Wang to carry out mass spectrometry analysis of cell lines, transgenic animal models and human clinical samples, as well as general laboratory molecular biology techniques, animal work, processing of human samples and general laboratory maintenance. Training can be provided for data analysis and scientific communication through lab meetings and potential contribution to scientific publications.

The ideal candidate for this position will have mass spectrometry experience in analysis DNA and lipids using mass spectrometry and would be a motivated individual able to work independently after training. There will be continuous learning opportunities, intellectual engagement, and scientific communication. This position is an excellent platform for individuals interested in gaining biomedical research experience for graduate or professional schools (medical, pharmacy etc.).

This is a renewable one-year appointment depending upon satisfactory job performance and funding availability.

Employment will end upon the expiration of work authorization in the US. Continued employment in this position is subject to eligibility to work in accordance with US immigration laws.

This is a fully on-site position.

Required Qualifications

  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.

  • Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

  • Formal training beyond a Bachelor of Science with background knowledge in Biology and/or Biochemistry.

  • Laboratory training of 6 months to 1 year in a medical or scientific research laboratory setting.

  • Experience working with metabolite analysis using mass spectrometry.

  • Willing to work with and handle mice. 

  • Experience in common computing software platforms (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).

  • Self-motivated and able to work independently. 

  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).

  • Detail-oriented and thorough in completing and communicating the results of work tasks. 

  • Ability to provide coverage in the face of colleagues’ absences/turnover.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in a relevant life sciences field.

  • Previous experience in extracting lipid metabolites from cell line or tissue samples, and analysis of extracted lipids on mass spectrometry.

  • Data interpretation and analysis of mass spectrometry lipid data.

  • Experience in flow cytometry.
