Job Description

The Preventing Diabetes in Latino Youth, Families, and Communities Lab is seeking a research Technician to be part of a collaborative research team to prevent type 2 diabetes in high risk communities.  The research technician will perform recruitment, enrollment, data collection and retention efforts for a study funded by the National Institutes of Health.  The position involves mentoring and supervision of undergraduate students in the research lab.  The candidate will be highly organized, efficient, and demonstrate a high degree of initiative and judgement based on knowledge and understanding of research methods with high risk populations.  They will have experience working with youth and adults from underserved communities.

Grant Funded Position

This is a grant funded position. Continuation is contingent on future grant funding.


Salary Range

$42,436 - $47,840 per year; DOE


Essential Duties

  • Recruit and enroll participants in a diabetes prevention research study through in-depth phone screenings and obtaining informed consent in-person in Spanish and English
  • Coordinate retention efforts through maintaining contact with study participants through phone calls, text messages, postcards to to ensure >90% retention of study participants.
  • Mentor, supervise, and monitor work of students in the research lab
  • Perform scientific data collections, reductions and analyses involving routine procedures characterized by moderate use of independent judgement maintain confidentiality.
  • Prepare lab supplies for collection of blood samples for Oral Glucose Tolerance Tests.
  • Maintain detailed records of data collection conducted and specimens collected; organize data; data entry into HIPAA protected database
  • Compile data and generates computerized statistical data for analytical purposes using software packages
  • Train students and staff in the operation of equipment and/or in the performance of technical procedures.
  • Inventories and requisitions supplies
  • Translate study related documents from English to Spanish. 
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment; OR, Four years research experience appropriate to the area of assignment; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.


Desired Qualifications

  • Bilingual- fluent in Spanish/English both oral and written.
  • Completion of an ASU Health Care related research practicum course
  • Demonstrated knowledge of modern research methods, data collection and analyses. 
  • Evidence of effective communication. 
  • Evidence of being highly organized and able to follow-through with detailed protocols and procedures with high accuracy.
  • Experience in solving problems, generating new ideas and approaches to improve protocols and procedures.
  • Experience in developing strong rapport with research participants, community partners, other research staff and investigators.

Working Environment

  • Ability to lift and transport 25 pounds
  • Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds

  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts
  • Required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work

Project Statement
The position is funded by a grant from the National Institutes of Health/National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.  The purpose of the study is to understand the risk factors for type 2 diabetes in youth.
