Job Description

The Arizona State University Biosciences Mass Spectrometry Core is seeking a Mass spectrometry research technician. This is a full-time (1.0 FTE) position that will involve sample
loading, data reporting, routine instrument and lab maintenance, supply ordering and making general lab chemicals. Facility instruments include a mixture of LCMS and GCMS mass
spectrometer instruments. Familiarity and prior experience running Mass Spectrometry instruments will be viewed favorably.

$20.40 - $21.63 per hour; DOE


Essential Duties

The Mass Spectrometry Research Technician will be responsible for:

  • Sample preparation 
  • Sample quantification
  • Mass spectrometry operation
  • Quality control
  • Data reporting
  • Data organization
  • Protocol optimization/updating
  • Routine instrument and lab maintenance
  • Supply ordering
  • Making general lab chemicals (for sample prep, LC/MS mobile phases, etc)
  • Cleaning dishware
  • Managing laboratory inventory
  • Autoclaving laboratory waste
  • Responding to any iLab or other inquiries or requests

Facility instruments include a mixture of LCMS, HPLC and GCMS mass spectrometer instruments. Familiarity and prior experience running Mass Spectrometry instruments will be viewed
favorably.


Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment; OR, Four years research experience appropriate to the area of assignment; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.


Desired Qualifications

  • Demonstrated knowledge of how Mass Spectrometry works, basic chemistry and biology.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and prior experience with LC-MS & GC-MS.
  • Experience with protocol development, including derivative selection and optimizing sample derivatization.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with mass spectral libraries.
  • Experience in performing routine maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Evidence of effective communication skills.
  • Evidence in haveing mathematical skills and experience performing calculations in Excel.

Working Environment

  • Regular activities require ability to manage multiple tasks at one time, to be able to prioritize tasks, and to communicate through verbal and written work.
  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting and laboratory subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse;
  • required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work.
  • Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
  • May be required to wear personal protective equipment before entering laboratories such as lab coat, gloves, safety glasses, closed toe shoes, and respirator.
