THIS IS A GRANT-FUNDED POSITION

JOB SUMMARY/ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The Biorepository and Integrative Genomics (BIG) is a University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) campus-wide research program that collects, processes, stores, distributes, and analyzes patient DNA to enhance UTHSC research opportunities. The Research Technician 2 adheres to established standard operating procedures to ensure laboratory quality control and compliance with professional standards of practice.  BIG operations span from the LeBonheur Children’s Hospital clinical laboratory to UTHS Integrative Genomics Biorepository, and includes high-throughput DNA extraction, sample archiving, genomic analyses, and clinical molecular testing, as needed.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs quality control testing, liquid handling, and sample storage in the biorepository.
  • Prepares DNA library, next-generation sequencing, and microarray analysis on BIG NGS systems.
  • Enters biorepository data into the BIG laboratory management system.
  • Performs testing of specimens received in the LeBonheur clinical laboratory.
  • Reports test results according to established standard operating procedures and laboratory protocols.
  • Manages resources such as supplies, productivity, instruments, and equipment.
  • Understands, applies, and supports departmental/hospital policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Attends departmental meetings, training sessions, and in-services offered to improve job performance and expand knowledge.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

    Qualifications

     

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:  

    EDUCATION:  Bachelor’s Degree in Biology or Natural Science. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)

    EXPERIENCE: OR a combination of education and work experience to equal (8) years. (One year of experience in molecular biology testing is preferred.) 

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

    • Molecular Biology and basic laboratory skills with the ability to independently conduct experiments.
    • Competency in routine clinical laboratory testing in assigned laboratory areas.
    • Knowledge of laboratory information systems, data collection, and entry.   
    • Ability to organize tasks and projects without close supervision.
    • Excellent interpersonal/human relations skills with coworkers, supervisors, internal, and external customers

    WORK SCHEDULE: This position may occasionally be required to work weekends.
