THIS IS GRANT-FUNDED POSITION

JOB SUMMARY/ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The Research Technician 2 assists with the oversight of mouse models of cancer for an NIH-funded project. Specific duties include genotyping and injecting mice with tumor cells, managing reagents, and conducting assays such as PCR, ELISAs, and Westerns at the bench.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs technical laboratory work including polymerase chain reaction, gel electrophoresis, and DNA/RNA isolations.
  • Manages complex resources such as mouse breeding, genotyping, planning for experiments, diet studies, isolation of tissues and primary cells, performs bone marrow transplants, and orthotopic transplants of cells.
  • Assists with planning, ordering, organizing, and monitoring resources in the lab, including inventory control and organization of chemicals, reagents, equipment, and animals.
  • Identifies problems, troubleshoots and analyzes issues independently and communicates these problems to the PI.
  • Leads exchange of research information through demonstration and instruction.
  • Contributes to the preparation of manuscripts, posters, and grants.
  • Prepares and delivers presentations in the department or at conferences.
  • Teaches lab personnel experimental procedures needed.
  • Maintains records, set priorities, and implements assignments in a timely manner.
  • Assist in preparation of research budgets.
  • Collaborates with lab members to participate in safety training including BSL2, biohazard radiation, and IACUC, LACU, DEA compliance, including inventory and monitoring radioactive use (if any).
  • Assists with the organizing the training of other lab members and students on methods and equipment used.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

    Qualifications

     

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:  

    EDUCATION: Bachelor’s Degree in Immunology, Biology, Cancer Cell Biology, Microbiology, or a related field. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)

    EXPERIENCE: OR a combination of education and work experience to equal (8) years. (Contributions to publications in scientific journals, abstracts, and presentations preferred).  

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

    • Extensive knowledge of mouse models.
    • Knowledge of specific techniques/equipment needed: Western imaging system, aseptic technique for cell culture of primary bone marrow cell culture and cell lines, ELISA, Western, qPCR, PCR, expression vectors (DNA and lentiviral), immunohistochemistry, rodent colony management, and xenograft/orthotopic cell implantation.
    • Ability to learn quickly, work independently, and work well in a team environment.
    • Skilled in project management.
    • Ability to contribute to grant and manuscript preparation is required.

    WORK SCHEDULE This position may occasionally be required to work evenings and weekends.
