POSITION OBJECTIVE 

Working under frequent supervision, perform technical procedures and experiments according to specific instructions/ protocols. The Research Technician 2 will be responsible for planning and performing experiments on projects related to assisting in the development of new treatment options for cancer. This position will perform a wide array of chemistry, cellular and animal experiments using HPLC, western blots, flow sorting, and fluorescence imaging to test the efficacy of the new agents. This position will also perform experiments to understand the immune response caused by the treatment. This position will work with animals. 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Perform technical procedures and experiments according to specific instructions/protocols with the supervisor to evaluate novel imaging/chemotherapeutic agents, including cell culture, fluorescence imaging, flow sorting, HPLC and LC-MS. (40%) 

2. Record experimental data; collect/tabulate/calculate. Record results for a particular experiment or closely related series of experiments. Maintain clear, accurate, and detailed records of experimental procedures, results, and conclusions. (10%) 

3. Perform mouse experiment, including tumor inoculation, blood collection, tail vein injection, fluorescence imaging and tissue collection. (30%)

 

NONESSENTIAL FUNCITONS

1. Enter sequences/data into computer; analyzes; performs machine repair. This will include data curation, graphing, and statistical analysis of data. Create PowerPoint slides from the data that has been curated, graphed and analyzed. May occasionally make small repairs to light equipment in the lab and work with vendors to accomplish larger repairs. (5%)

2. Extract data for follow-up which includes analyzing data from imaging machines. (5%)

3. Purchase routine lab supplies, collect receipts, monitor expenditures. Assist with general organizational and maintenance of the laboratory. Order lab supplies including but not limited to pipettes, culture plates and test tubes. (5%)

4. Perform other duties as assigned. (5%)

 

CONTACTS

Department: Daily contact with supervisor to discuss experiments, results, ordering and other lab-related topics. Daily contact with other members of the laboratory and the department, to facilitate the exchange of ideas, techniques etc.

University: Occasional contact with other departments to share information.

External: Limited or no contact with vendors to exchange information.

Students: Contact with student employees to exchange information.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position has no direct supervision of staff employees.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: 1 to 2 years of related experience required.

Education/Licensing: High school education required.

 

REQUIRED SKILLS 

1. Has knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field.

2. Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. 

3. Ability to operate laboratory equipment.

4. Experience with cell culture 

5. Previous experience with HPLC and LC-MS preferred

6. Ability to work under general supervision

7. Excellent organization and record keeping

8. Detail oriented and ability to multi-task 

9. Self-motivated and ability to work in a team environment

10. Ability to meet consistent attendance.

11. Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors and customers face to face.

12. Previous experience working with animals preferred.

13. Must demonstrate compliance with CWRU animal research and care (ARC) policies and procedures and compliance to regulations of the Animal Welfare Act, Public Health Service Policy, AAALAC guidelines and other applicable regulatory guidelines.

14. Must demonstrate compassion for animals within CWRU facilities and dedication to the Animal Resource Center's mission. Must handle animals with care and respect at all times.

15. Must be able and willing to learn new techniques, procedures, processes, and computer gear to protect the health of the animals.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

General laboratory environment: The lab is an open general laboratory environment. May have exposure to chemical and biological hazards. Personal protective equipment, including lab coat, gloves and goggles, will be provided to limit exposure to hazards.
