Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Research Teaching Specialist V (RTS) for the Center for Advanced Biotechnology and Medicine (CABM) located on the Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences Campus in Piscataway, NJ. This position is sometimes called a “Research Technician” or “Research Assistant” at other universities.  
The Oldenburg Laboratory at CABM is seeking an outstanding RTS to join an exciting neuroscience project developing and utilizing new optical and molecular tools to study neural circuits. Under the direction of the Principal Investigator (PI), Dr. Ian Oldenburg, the RTS will contribute to investigations of the role of neural activity in guiding and initiating motor actions. The RTS will assist the research of other scientists in the lab, maintain the activities of the lab, as well as run independent projects. While projects will evolve over time, an initial project will involve rodent behavioral training, and will benefit from a multidisciplinary skillset.   
Mentorship is a core mission of the Oldenburg Lab. All members of the lab are expected to be helpful and supportive of each other. The PI will endeavor to do what he can to help each member succeed, both within the lab and when they eventually move on. As such, every member of the lab is encouraged to explore that which interests them and to share their specific expertise. In addition, the RTS will have the opportunity to attend scientific conferences and learn appropriate scientific methods and procedures.   
The RTS is expected to have experience in conducting and analyzing scientific experiments involving rodent models and in neuroscience techniques, such as genotyping, survival surgery, histology, microscopy, electrophysiology, calcium imaging, or coding. The RTS will be responsible for maintenance and genotyping of the mouse colony and will assist with ongoing research projects in the lab. The RTS will also be responsible for ordering reagents and supplies as well as collaborating with the Principal Investigator in monitoring how the resources are used in the lab. The RTS is expected to maintain a high level of research competency, knowledge, and skills to perform duties assigned by the Principal Investigator.  
This is a grant-funded position contingent on the availability of funds to support it. 
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Handles, breeds, genotypes, and trains rodents for experimental purposes. 
  • Attends and participates in regular lab meetings. 
  • Maintains databases of lab equipment, reagents, and animals. 
  • Performs the standard experiments in the lab: Rodent behavioral training, microscopy, multiphoton imaging, rodent surgical procedures, PCR, etc. Evaluates existing procedures and proposes modifications or changes in order to keep the methodology and procedures current. 
  • Manages and maintains lab supplies, stocks, equipment, inventories, and databases, and helps to evaluate and improve lab management practices as required. 
  • Assists with ordering lab supplies, providing the Principal Investigator with purchase recommendations, and help improve the cost effectiveness and environmental impact of lab operations.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant science.  
  • Prior research experience an asset.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Effective oral and written communication skills. 
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in a relevant science is preferred, as is one (1) year of related research.  
  • Prior mouse work experience.

  • Physical Demands: Manual dexterity and vision sufficient for standard laboratory operations including pipetting and use of microscopes.  Lifting up to 25 lbs. 
  • Work Environment: Lab environment.  Universal precautions are mandatory.
