Position Focus:

The Wu Tsai Institute at Yale University is a university-wide neuroscience initiative that seeks to understand human cognition — how we perceive, think, remember, and decide — by integrating psychology, biology, data science, and other disciplines. The Institute is based at 100 College Street and contains three research centers.

Reporting to the Director of BrainWorks, the incumbent will provide user-facing and internal technical support to facilitate the use of BrainWorks by a wide range of researchers with diverse interests and abilities. In doing so, the incumbent will promote and advance best practices in data collection, management, and analysis within both the Wu Tsai Institute and broader cognitive neuroscience community.

Develop and maintain neuroinformatics database and data connectors. Develop and maintain systems for participant screening, recruitment, and databasing. Linux and Windows system administration. Develop software and hardware solutions for multimodal data collection. Develop best practice software frameworks for stimulus presentation and data analysis. Write and maintain documentation. Provide software and hardware support to users. Perform quality-control checks to ensure accurate electrophysiological data collection and timely delivery of stimuli and experimental codes, etc. Other duties as assigned.


Essential Duties

1. Participates in the planning, conceiving, designing and implementation of highly specialized state of the art instrumentation equipment and apparatus for a multi-faceted research project 2. Solves engineering and design problems to ensure that equipment meets the objective of the study 3. Develops reports and proposals for research project outlining machinery available, direction of the design, and development of new instrumentation. 4. Determines available resources such as electrical and mechanical components and equipment. 5. Develops cost and time estimates for specific equipment design. Ensures time and cost estimates are met. 6. Supervises and monitors work of professionals and solicits consulting work from outside labs 7. Manages quality control of work performed on research projects. 8. Teaches research support theories and design. 9. May perform other duties as assigned.


Required Education and Experience

Bachelor's Degree in a related field and five years of related experience in a research development facility or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


Required Skill/Ability 1:

Skilled in balancing multiple projects at once, with varying deadlines and priorities, demonstrating high levels of initiative and resourcefulness.


Required Skill/Ability 2:

Demonstrated knowledge of major software systems used in human neuroscience and psychology experiments, including Linux, git, Psychtoolbox, PsychoPy, FreeCAD, as well as Windows and Microsoft Office.


Required Skill/Ability 3:

Proven ability to write in programming languages including Python, R, JavaScript, MATLAB, C++, and C.


Required Skill/Ability 4:

Provide high-level research and low-level technical support to researchers and collaborators.


Required Skill/Ability 5:

Proven ability to form and maintain professional, productive partnerships with faculty, researchers, students, and staff, and clearly communicate complex concepts.
