Job Summary

Sulfuric acid and polysulfurs form in the Venus atmosphere primarily from chemistry derived from the photodissociation of SO2. The research assistant will use a diurnal model of KINETICS to investigate day-night differences in the Venus atmospheric chemistry, and will compare to observations and mission measurements. Similar S-chemistry may have occurred at early Mars too and the research assistant may also extend this model to Mars to explain Mars Science Laboratory measurements of SO2 and H2S deposits in the Martian soils today.

Essential Job Duties

  • Prepare input files such as photolysis rates coefficients and kinetic rates coefficients
  • Run the KINETICS code for Venus and later for Mars
  • Plot results from model runs
  • Compare results to observations
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

  • Python
  • Basic Chemistry

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous research experience with planetary atmosphere and chemical kinetics
