The Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine (PACCSM) at the University of Pittsburgh is seeking a Senior Laboratory Technician in a state-of-the-art internationally recognized pulmonary research program in the area of asthma. The position requires performance of specialized techniques to understand various aspects of lung inflammation and its regulation.



Job Summary

Performs a variety of independent laboratory work and experiments such as determining experimental protocols and preparation of specimens and cultures. Prepares reports of findings subsequent to compilation and analyzation. Oversees specimen inventory. Develops documentation for publication; crafts manuscripts and grant proposals.


Essential Functions 

The Research Specialist will be responsible for the processing of human samples from healthy subjects and asthma patients for immediate use and cryopreservation. The samples will include blood and lung lavage. Implementation of existing and new disease models using wild-type and genetically modified mice. Mice will need to be bred and genotyped to maintain the lines. Different techniques would be used to study human and mouse samples. This will include PCR, qRT-PCR, ELISA, flow cytometry, microscopy and imaging using specialized equipment. Administer the day-today operation of the laboratory including maintaining an inventory control/replacement system, scheduling equipment maintenance, tracking laboratory expenditures in the context of the available budget. Performance of assigned lab jobs including equipment and reagent maintenance attendance of workshops locally or at other institutions may be needed for additional training.


Physical Effort 

The appointee must be able to access the laboratory and maneuver in the space to be able to perform necessary research protocols. No heavy lifting is required.
