Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Division of Diagnostic Sciences focuses on oral radiology and pathology through a combination of basic science and general dentistry, guides the diagnosis of oral diseases, and helps develop patient treatment plans. Expert faculty lead the division in the areas of general dentistry, oral and maxillofacial pathology, and oral and maxillofacial radiology, orofacial pain, sleep medicine, and oral microbiology.
Position Summary
The research specialist will be responsible for conducting various laboratory experiments under the supervision of Dr. Apoena Ribeiro, with an emphasis on oral microbiology. The research specialist’s primary responsibility will be to carry out the goals of research projects in the Ribeiro Laboratory, involving the oral microbiome and understanding the relationship between dental biofilms and oral diseases, such as dental caries (cavities) and periodontal disease, and finding novel therapeutic strategies to control pathogenic biofilms. These goals will necessitate that the selected candidate handles clinical samples, bacterial/fungi isolates of unknown identification, perform bacterial/fungi growth under different conditions and medium, and perform biomolecular assays, including (but not limited to) DNA/RNA extractions, PCR, real-time PCR and western blot. The selected candidate will also collect and record data as specified in developed protocols as well as assess accuracy, validity, and integrity of data. The research specialist will also assist other Ribeiro laboratory personnel, undergraduate and graduate students, and volunteer researches as needed. In addition, the research specialist will contribute to the organization of the laboratory by helping keep accurate inventory, restocking laboratory supplies and assisting with maintenance of lab equipment.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Previous experience conducting laboratory experiments with an emphasis on performing biofilm models and biomolecular assays; deep understanding of research ethics and integrity; previous experience training others in the performance of lab tests and procedures. Experience in basic and molecular microbiology science laboratories with working knowledge of bacterial and fungi cultures, DNA and RNA molecular techniques. Excellent aseptic technique and solid background in fundamental microbiological techniques.
