Posting Context Statement
This position will support the establishment of the Udekwu lab focused on the growth (culture) of gut and environmental bacteria. The goal of these studies is to understand how microbial communities interact and evolve. Duties include growing and maintaining bacterial cultures, ordering and maintaining laboratory supplies, and DNA, RNA and protein purification.
Position Overview
Performs research activities and analysis, recording observations and measurements, and reports results. Participates in analyzing and preparing results for publication. Works under general supervision.
Duties may include:
  • Preparing standard solutions for calibration and analyses
  • Interpreting test results and comparing with determined standards and limits
  • Collecting laboratory or field data
  • Conducting research and analysis of scientific data
  • Participating in research design discussions
  • Performing literature reviews
  • Preparing reports
  • Comparing data and historical records for trend verification
  • Developing reference files, comparison charts, and graphs on research data
  • Assisting with site inspections and field oversight
  • Having little or no supervisory responsibilities
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Experience

Required Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in microbiology, biochemistry, bio-engineering, or related field

Required Other
Additional Preferred
  • Experience with research lab organization or management
  • Previous use of Electronic Laboratory Notebook reporting
  • One year of research experience
  • Work with continuous cultures or bioreactors and / or sequencing or protein profiling a merit
  • Knowledge in performing data analysis in R
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
  • May require working with toxic, volatile, and corrosive chemicals and/or carcinogenic substances
  • May require working with Biosafety level 2 (BSL2) microorganisms
  • Ability to lift, carry and/or otherwise move objects weighing up to 25 lbs
Degree Requirement Listed degree qualification is required at time of hire
