Research Specialist 2 - Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center - Georgetown University Medical Center

Georgetown’s Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center (LCCC) seeks to improve the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of cancer through innovative basic and clinical research, patient care, community education and outreach, and the training of cancer specialists for the future. Founded in 1970, LCCC is one of only 41 institutions in the nation designated by the NCI as a comprehensive cancer center, and it is the only comprehensive cancer center in the Washington, DC area.

The goal of its Cancer Prevention and Control Program (CPC) is to conduct research designed to better understand the determinants of cancer behaviors and outcomes and to reduce the burden of cancer in individuals, populations, and society.

Job Overview

The Research Specialist 2 supports the breast cancer research activities of Lombardi’s CPC in responsibilities such as project management and implementation of several awarded grants pertaining to cancer survivorship, health equity, translational genomics, and cancer disparities research.

Overall, all research projects are related to reducing symptom burden in cancer survivors, and addressing cancer prevention and control in socio-economically disadvantaged populations, racial/ethnic subgroups, and other groups that bear disproportionate cancer burden in the US. Exemplar activities include the completion of general research related tasks such preparation of IRB documents, recruiting, consenting and interviewing participants, developing intervention materials, data collection surveys and interviews, data entry, qualitative and quantitative data coding and analysis, writing reports, assisting with grant writing, assisting with manuscripts writing, coordinating trainings, communicating with study sites.

Work Interactions

Reporting directly to Assistant Professor Alejandra Hurtado de Mendoza, Associate Professor Kristi Graves, and to the Project Coordinator, the Research Assistant 2 interacts closely with community organizations.

They work on several projects that aim to reduce cancer disparities in underserved populations - for example, an assessment of the impact of COVID-19 in African American and Latina breast cancer survivors; a National Cancer Institute R01 multisite five year grant to assess the impact of a culturally targeted video to enhance uptake of genetic counseling and testing in Latina women at-risk of hereditary breast and ovarian cancer; a National Cancer Institute R25 grant to train community outreach workers to enhance referrals to genetic counseling and testing for at-risk Latinas; and a National Cancer Institute R01 grant to evaluate an expressive helping writing intervention to reduce symptoms in patients who undergo stem cell transplant.

Our faculty represents diverse backgrounds and interests, and include behavioral scientists, health services researchers, epidemiologists, community researchers, psychologists, decision analysts, health economists, ethicists, and statisticians.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • BA or BS in Psychology, Health Science, Public Health, Epidemiology, Anthropology or closely related fields - preference for Master’s in health-related sciences
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent communication, organization, and time management skills
  • Cultural competence gained from interactions/communications with individuals from diverse backgrounds
  • Experience working both independently and collaboratively in a team
  • Fluency in Spanish
  • Experience in academic writing

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in any or all: research; working at hospital settings; IRB protocols; conducting interviews and surveys; and/or data collection and participant management tools (e.g., REDCap) and/or statistical analysis and programs (e.g., SPSS, SAS)
