Job Title: Research Services Entry Laboratory Science Professional

Job Summary:

A professional research assistant position is available starting in August in the laboratories of Dr. Mercedes Rincon and Dr.  Curtis Henry, Department of Immunology and Microbiology, University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. The research focus of the laboratory is broad and covers areas of a) role of IL-6 in CD4 and CD8 cell response in the context of virus infection/vaccination, autoimmune disease (e.g. rheumatoid arthritis), asthma and cancer; b) cancer chemoresistance, e) generation of CAR-T cells for treatment of cancer, e) effect of obesity in cancer and cancer treatment. These studies require the use of a large number of genetically modified mouse models.

The successful candidate will manage a mouse colony, help maintain the operation of the laboratory (as a lab manager) and participate in the different research projects. Applicants should have received a BS degree in biology related field. Experience and background in handling mice is a requirement. Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage mouse colonies for the lab (including breeding, genotyping, analysis of mouse models).
  • Collects, accurately records, and analyzes data in conjunction with other research staff.
  • Perform DNA extractions, PCR, and other molecular biology techniques.
  • Immunization and tumors models.
  • Keeping mice on special diets.
  • Maintains laboratory records, supplies, samples in an organized manner.
  • Complete University laboratory safety training and maintain University certification to work with hazardous chemicals, recombinant DNA molecules, and animals studies.
  • Follow all University guidelines regarding the management of chemical, radiochemical and infectious waste.
  • Tabulate research data and keep a detailed, easy to understand laboratory notebook, and accurately collect and maintain up-to-date records of experimental data.
  • Be willing to work occasionally with flexible hours.

Work Location:

Onsite – this role is expected to work onsite and is located in Aurora, CO.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics, or related field.
    • A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a year for year basis.

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience or background within an experimental or wet lab.
  • Prior experience in handling mouse colonies (breeding, weaning, bleeding etc.).
  • Experience in managing a large mouse colony, keeping record of mice, and screening of genetically manipulated mice, and understanding mouse genetics.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of basic laboratory techniques including safety procedures and techniques.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution.
  • Demonstrated commitment and leadership ability to advance diversity and inclusion.
  • Ability to interpret and master complex research protocol information.

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range ) for this position has been established as $42,088 - $53,536.

The above salary range (or hiring range ) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position may be eligible for overtime compensation, depending on the level.
