Job Description
Research Scientist to conduct independent research in the Department of Microbial Infection and Immunity, focusing on the role of biofilms in dental and orthopedic disease; under the guidance of scientific mentor, develops, adopts and implements new laboratory methods in an independent fashion that obtain answers to the scientific questions addressed by the research study; plans, designs and conducts complex experiments; compiles, analyzes, and evaluates data to establish the relevance to the problems being evaluated; collaborates in determining research priorities and planning programs of research; consults with PIs and lab personnel on research themes; participates in the development of new proposals for research; develops, writes, and submits grant proposals of original research for funding as principal investigator or co-principal investigator to extramural funding agencies to obtain significant salary and research support from outside agencies; prepares research results for presentations at national and international scientific meetings; extracts, compiles and writes manuscripts, articles, abstracts and research reports for publication in peer-reviewed journals; composes, conducts, and participates in training workshops, lectures, journal clubs, and seminars; oversees fellows, medical students, graduate students, post-docs and lab support personnel; maintains biohazard safety procedures; oversees equipment purchases, use and maintenance; participates in laboratory meetings and Department activities.
 

Minimum Education Required
MD, PhD, or MD/PhD required, or equivalent combination of education and experience with a Major in biological sciences or related field.


Required Qualifications
Demonstrated ability to be a competent and productive researcher as documented by several publications of considerable interest and value to the field as evidence by favorable reviews, by citation in the work of others, by presentations of papers to professional societies, and/or will have contributed inventions, new designs, or techniques which are of material significance in the solution of important applied problems required. Requires successful completion of a background check. Selected candidate may be requested to complete a pre-employment physical including a drug screen.
