We are committed to building a diverse and inclusive faculty and staff. The Division of Genetic Medicine is currently recruiting for a Full Time Research Scientist/Engineer 1.

The goal of the laboratory is to collect, dissect, characterize and distribute human fetal tissues for a wide variety of research projects.  Tissue characterization includes, histopathology, immunofluorescence microscopy and genetic laboratory methods to understand the underlying mechanisms of tissue defects.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Job duties may include, but are not limited to: 

Bench Research 50%
• Perform basic specimen, organ/tissue dissection and perform histopathological techniques including tissue/organ identification, documentation, sectioning, and preparation for imaging and microscopy and QI measures
• Perform molecular biological research techniques including cell/ nucleic acid isolation, PCR, tissue culture, and single cell preparations as well as QI estimates
• Prepare solutions and reagents following standard laboratory techniques

General Research Support 50%
• Drive to clinics to collect research specimens and when needed perform telephone subject consenting
• Maintain research documentation/database , progress report statistics and grant proposals
• Liaise effectively with recipient investigators to process samples by their protocols and ship via FedEx
• Maintain and record accurately various tissue and cell repositories
• Clean and disinfect laboratory areas and equipment
• Support strict lab safety practices as related to wet chemicals, compressed gases, tissue culture, and hazardous materials, and support the laboratory's compliance with federal and state safety regulations
• Attend lab meetings and communicate results at laboratory group meetings
• Other duties as assigned 

Minimum Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in a related field and one year of relevant experience, OR Equivalent combination of education/experience.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

Desired Qualifications: 
• Practical experience in human tissue dissection and procurement; understanding of anatomic, medical, and scientific terminology
• Experience with Microsoft Access database and/or bio-hazardous material preferred
• Familiarity with HFT tissue procurement and anatomy
• Willing and able to work flexible hours, includes some Saturdays
• Ability to maintain medical confidences
• Willingness to collect and ship biological samples
• Valid WA State Driver's License
• Excellent communication skills/multi-tasking capabilities including liaising effectively with collaborators
