We thrive on finding and cultivating talented people who are passionate about what they do. Join us and be a part of the diverse Caltech community.
Job Summary
The Quantum Photonics Group led by Professor Oskar Painter is seeking a motivated and skilled research scientist to join its team to carry independent research in the field of superconducting quantum circuits for quantum information processing. In particular, the successful candidate must be able to contribute to ongoing research projects in experimental detection and control of low-frequency two level systems (TLS), which constitute a major source of low-frequency noise in superconducting qubits, as well as develop new ideas and stay up to date with the field of experimental quantum computing. The work includes all aspects of superconducting qubit development, including designs, simulations, nanofabrication, packaging, and measurement.
Essential Job Duties
  • Use theoretical models and computational methods to simulate and analyze the behavior of quantum systems.
  • Conduct quantum device simulations (e.g., Sonnet) to optimize design parameters.
  • Fabricate and package devices in a university cleanroom.
  • Develop Python scripts for the acquisition and analysis of experimental data.
  • Organize and conduct experiments to study low-frequency TLSs.
  • Perform microwave frequency measurements for device characterization using Quantum Machines equipment.
  • Analyze experimental data and contribute to the interpretation of results.
  • Ensure the proper functioning and maintenance of a dilution refrigerator.
  • Supervise and mentor junior students.
  • Ensure compliance with laboratory safety protocols and best practices.
  • Contribute original research and stay up to date with the latest results in the field of experimental quantum computing.
  • Initiate and/or collaborate in writing peer-reviewed research papers and present findings at conferences.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications
  • Ph.D. degree in Applied Physics, Physics, Electrical Engineering, or related field.
  • Programming skills in Python or MATLAB.
  • Experience in fabrication process development in the areas of electron beam lithography, dry and wet etching, deposition, microscopy, and device packaging.
  • Ability to work independently. Possess excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • One or more scientific publication submissions in recognized academic journals or conferences.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with superconducting qubit design and measurements.
  • Experience with electromagnetic simulations. Experience with cryogenic hardware and microwave engineering.
  • Possess a team attitude.
  • At least one year of paid postdoctoral position or industry experience.
