Work Performed -

The Perioperative Neurocognitive Research Team at Duke University Medical Center (https://anesthesiology.duke.edu/research/berger-lab) is looking for a talented research scholar or staff scientist with experience in clinical research to work on NIH R01-funded project “Low Neurophysiologic Resistance to Anesthetics as a Marker of Preclinical Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias Pathology and Postoperative Delirium Risk” and the Merck Investigation Studies Program-funded project “ Efficacy of suvorexant to improve postoperative sleep and reduce delirium severity in older non-cardiac surgical patients: A double-blinded, randomized, placebo-controlled trial”. These projects seek to understand 1) whether altered (or exaggerated) brain activity responses to anesthetic drugs is a marker of an unhealthy brain, i.e. a brain with signs of “pre-clinical” Alzheimer’s Disease and which is at increased risk of postoperative delirium, and 2) whether postoperative administration of an orexin antagonist improves postoperative sleep and prevents delirium. This is an excellent opportunity for those interested in clinical-translational neuroscience and anesthesiology research. In this position, the research scholar will assist with intraoperative and postoperative EEGs,and learn how to conduct sleep EEG analysis. The research scholar will receive full benefits (including health insurance) from Duke University Medical Center, and will benefit from rich collaboration with the Duke/UNC Alzheimer’s Disease Center and the larger neuroscience community at Duke.
