Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Department of Epidemiology is one of the seven departments located in the Gillings School of Global Public Health. The department’s primary focus is to the development and application of research methods to understand the patterns and causes of health and disease, and the application of that knowledge to improving the health of populations. We provide strong training in research methods and opportunities for the application of epidemiology to a wide range of health problems through our research. The achievements of our faculty, staff, students, and alumni have enabled us to become one of the leading academic departments of epidemiology in the world. The department has 30 Tenured-Tenure Track / 7 Joint Tenure-Track Faculty, 25 Fixed Term / 3 Joint Fixed Term Faculty, 120 Adjuncts, 19 EHRA Non-Faculty, 15 Postdocs, 34 SHRA (Staff), 44 SHRA Temporary and 202 Students.The department’s operating budget is 27 million a year.
Position Summary
We are recruiting a full-time Research Project Manager to join the Epidemiology Department at The UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health. The Research Project Manager position will work with Drs. Justin Lessler and Kimberly Powers (co-Directors) to manage the activities of the Atlantic Coast Center for Infectious Disease Dynamics and Analytics (ACCIDDA) and coordination of the larger Insight Net Network. ACCIDDA is a multi-institutional center funded by the CDC Center for Forecasting and Outbreak Analytics (CFA) focused on improving response to infectious disease threats in close conjunction with state and local health departments. ACCIDDA is the coordinating center for Insight Net, a network of 13 centers funded for a total of over 200 million dollars. This project manager will be responsible for planning, organizing and managing activities for the successful execution of the ACCIDDA center and the larger network, as well as supporting applications for additional funding. Specific duties to include:
* Develops protocols, project timelines, and project budgets.
* Manage relationships with state, territorial, local and tribal departments of public health, including development of memorandum of understanding and data use agreements.
* Prepare and submit regulatory and compliance documents including work plans, data management plans and evaluation plans. 
* Facilitate and manage collaboration and communications between Insight Net centers including planning and execution of large (200+ attendee) network wide meetings. 
* Ensures compliance with government regulations, university policies, and institutional review board requirements.
* Oversees day-to-day operation of the project.
* Manages center to ensure adherence to milestones and project budgets.
* Develops and submit required progress and final reports.
* Establishes and maintains collaborative relationships with administrators, faculty, staff, and external collaborators.
* Work with PIs to prepare scientific and public health communications including preparation of scientific manuscripts, public health guidance documents and reports to government agencies (state, local and federal)
* Supports grant proposal development including scientific writing and/or editing, tracking and gathering of required materials and creation of final documents.
* Coordinates scheduling of team meetings and leads discussions as appropriate.
* Train, monitor, and supervise research staff, including research assistants, fellows, and students
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution. May require terminal degree and licensure.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
1-3 years’ postgraduate experience, including at least one year of project management experience as a lab manager or equivalent industry-type position. Experience with multi-investigator collaborations. Demonstrated ability to carry out multiple tasks and move between tasks continuously. Superior organizational and time management skills. Excellent verbal and written communication and problem-solving skills. This individual must be flexible, resourceful, strategic, and collaborative yet able to work effectively with a high degree of independence.
Experience gained during graduate or post-doctoral studies is acceptable.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
MPH or MS in Epidemiology, Disease Ecology, Biostatistics, or related field. At least one year of experience working as a project lead. DUA and data sharing protocol creation. Experience building relationships with rural and tribal health departments. Experience creating presentations, reports, and publications. Experience with online cohorts. Knowledge of CDC funding mechanisms and the UNC system regulations.
Special Physical/Mental Requirements
These efforts include preparedness for emergency response to infectious threats. As such, high-stress conditions involving rapid staff deployment and emergency protocol implementation might be experienced.
