The Department of Mental Health seeks a Research Program Assistant who will be responsible for organizing and completing computerized classroom observations of students and teachers within participating Baltimore City Public Schools currently enrolled in NIH/IES research projects.

The Research Program Assistant position is a seasonal casual/on-call position. The data collection window lasts approximately 6 weeks in the Fall (typically starting around the end of September) and 6 weeks again in the Spring (typically starting in early April). During the data collection window, the hours will be about 35-40 per week. There will be a period of training prior to each data collection period (starting around the end of March for the spring round & around mid-September in the fall) that will last about 2-weeks, at approximately 20-25 hours per week.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Collecting data using computerized interviewing materials designed to assess a broad range of tailored and comprehensive classroom behaviors.
  • Will attend extensive trainings to learn how to work independently to establish contact with teachers and school personnel, build rapport, and conduct unbiased computerized observations and follow-up assessments within the school.
  • Must successfully pass training to continue with employment.
  • Will meet regularly with research team as part of daily supervision meetings.
  • Responsible for daily travel to the selected schools within the participating school systems to gather scheduling information and conduct the classroom observations

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Must have strong organizational skills, attention to detail, be able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Must be willing & able to travel in and around schools in Baltimore City &/or other participating school systems as needed.
  • Proficiency with laptops, tablets, computers, and MS Office applications.
  • Must clear Baltimore City Public Schools criminal background and finger-printing checks.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or graduation equivalent, with some college courses preferred.
  • Some related experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree. in Psychology, Mental Health, Social Work, Public Health, Education, or related field strongly preferred.
  • Experience working with confidential data &/or conducting student assessments within a school setting.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis.
