Research Medical Scribe, Department of Emergency Medicine

The Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Virginia (UVA) School of Medicine seeks applications for two Medical Scribes to join their team. The Department of Emergency Medicine supports UVA Medical Center as a Level I Trauma Center.  UVA Emergency Department  cares for over 75,000 patients per year, has 80 private patient rooms, 45,000 square feet, and designated treatment areas for pediatrics, trauma/resuscitation, and behavioral health. The ED includes adult and pediatric services, active air and ground transport programs, and is supported by a poison control center.

The Department of Emergency Medicine’s Medical Scribe Program , began in in 2007, it provides support to Emergency Medicine physicians and staff as well as other departments within UVA.

The successful candidate will be expected to provide research and clinical assistance to faculty by performing on-site medical transcription, data entry, and research and administrative support. Theses scribes work directly with patients, physicians, clinical research coordinators and other team members to obtain patient data and specimens as required by protocols. They enter data into project and medical record databases and assist with documentation. They may accompany physicians on patient encounters to record accurate medical information including notes of communication, past medical records, laboratory results, etc.

Qualified candidates must have a high school diploma or equivalent. The ideal candidate must be communicative; have auditory and visual skills; attention to detail and ability to write and communicate professionally and legibly.

Preferred Qualifications include experience as a medical scribe or some form of medical record experience such as EMT, CNA, CMA, Paramedic or other para-medical profession.

The Medical Scribes will report to the Assistant Administrator for Operations.

PHYSICIAL DEMANDS

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.  Additionally, this position may require the ability to remain in a stationary position for prolonged periods, frequently bending/stooping.  May be exposed to noise, blood/body fluids and infectious disease.

This position is located in-person in Charlottesville, VA.

The anticipated start date is January 2024.  This position is a restricted position and is dependent upon project need, availability of funding and performance.  Anticipated Hiring Range: $16.00 to $18.00 / hour commensurate with education and experience.
