Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
The Research Integrity Officer (RIO) has lead responsibility for ensuring that the University of Maryland (UMD) complies with all requirements established by all federal regulations or other sources of authority regarding the handling of allegations of research misconduct and for handling such matters in accordance with the UMD’s Policy and Procedures Concerning Scholarly Misconduct .
The University of Maryland, College Park, is a Research I university. It houses 12 academic units, employs roughly 4,700 faculty, and enrolls approximately 41,000 students. As of fall 2023, UMD’s research funding increased 23% in a single year to $834 million, and roughly three quarters of these awards are federally funded.
Reporting to the Associate Provost for Faculty Affairs, the position will also engage in responsible conduct of research training and other research integrity initiatives. The RIO will play a critical role in the continued development of a centralized research integrity presence on campus.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
Earned J.D. or other advanced degree from an accredited institution related to the field of investigating.

Experience:

  • A minimum of ten (10) years of related work experience research compliance and administration or related experience in an academic research environment. 
  • Two (2) years’ experience as a research integrity officer (RIO) in a position of overall responsibility for program development, direction, coordination, and implementation.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of current best practices in research misconduct and research integrity and familiarity with applicable federal regulations;
  • Strong interpersonal, communication skills, superior writing and documentation skills, and the ability to interact effectively and efficiently with a variety of internal and external individuals or agency representatives;
  • Ability to provide guidance and instruction to others;
  • Ability to address highly sensitive, confidential, and emotionally fraught situations with tact, discretion, and integrity;
  • Ability to manage multiple, ongoing, and complex projects;
  • Excellent judgment, discretion, personal maturity, integrity, and ability to maintain neutrality in challenging situations;
  • Keen intellect, strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and an appreciation for detail and thoroughness; and
  • Demonstrated commitment to serving a diverse population with cultural competence, diplomacy, and sensitivity.
Preferences:
Preferences:
  • Experience working in a research environment at a large, Research I university that is similarly scaled to UMD;
  • Experience in a clinical or laboratory setting;
  • Ability to perform forensic analysis of evidence and to use forensic applications to analyze alleged image manipulation and plagiarism;
  • Experience conducting investigations (e.g., faculty, student, or staff conduct; regulatory compliance issues; employment matters/human resources issues; other forms of internal investigation or audit; law enforcement or legal services work);
  • Experience advising on policies and procedures related to conduct issues, institutional requirements/expectations, or investigations;
  • Knowledge of the complexities surrounding investigations into sensitive areas and behavioral/conduct issues;
  • Experience with teaching courses or workshops on research ethics or responsible conduct of research (RCR);
  • Ease with presenting information to committees and faculty audiences on research integrity related topics.

Physical Demands
Work is performed in an office setting; sedentary work with repetitive motion. The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform activities such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; and, extensive reading.
Must have the ability to traverse distances on campus, around the State of Maryland and nationally for events and meetings.
