Summary

The Department of the History of Art, University of Michigan, seeks applicants for a postdoctoral fellowship broadly in the field of ancient art in conjunction with the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology, University of Michigan. Projects engaged with any aspect of the ancient world, particularly (but not limited to) the ancient Middle East, and subsidiary expertise in late antiquity and related fields, are welcome.

Responsibilities*

The one-year appointment begins in August 2024 with a possible one-year renewal. The successful applicant should have a Ph.D. in hand by the time of appointment in August 2024. The applicant will be expected to be in residence in Ann Arbor during the term of the appointment. They will teach one academic course per academic year for the History of Art department, and assist with duties regarding the new permanent installation, Crossroads of Culture, 400-1800 at the Kelsey Museum. Duties at the museum consist of assisting curators with developing and refining object lists and storylines, collecting and maintaining graphic materials (photos, maps etc.) for didactic purposes, and assisting with outreach, focus groups and conservation efforts. The successful applicant may take charge of components of the exhibition depending on expertise and experience. History of Art will furnish a faculty mentor to work with the successful applicant, to help open doors to the UM community and to provide guidance as requested or needed.


Required Qualifications*

A PhD in a relevant specialized field, acquired within the past five years, is required before appointment. Applicants should provide a cover letter, CV, research plan, teaching statement,     dissertation or book abstract, an article or dissertation chapter as a sample of scholarly writing, and two letters of recommendation. 


Desired Qualifications*

Museum experience is desirable but not mandatory.
